With the recent signing of 7 year wide out, Greg Jennings by Minnesota, things look a little brighter for Vikings fans heading into 2013 off season already.
The Percy Harvin trade dazed and left a stained smudge on the franchise, as he was the only bona fide threat catching the ball for them. But the other side, of course is his attitude and his diva-like need to criticize about his roll with the team, which I never could fully wrap my head around.
So, here we are, Harvin-less, a couple 1st round picks coming up and a very talented WR in Greg Jennings coming in to help shore up a young wide receiving corps for Minnesota.
Starting off, Jennings will be an enormous target for Christian Ponder and his growth. When Jennings has 100 or more targets in a season, he creates exceptional numbers, Ponder will be throwing the ball to him as their WR1, and I bet will see 100 to 120 targets on the season. This will help so many aspects of the Vikings scheme of attack. If he gets this, big playmaker, Jennings could with no trouble be a 9 TD guy.
Jarius Wright, a rising young slot receiver will fill in adequately for Harvin’s spot, mind you, Wright, when he played fill in for Harvin, had some very solid numbers. With 22 catches, 310 yards, 2 TDs, and 14.1 yards/catch. The Vikes went 5-2 without Percy, with this method, so put Wright at the slot, Jennings as his big play man, Rudolph as their TE, Vikes I believe have a very underestimated and possibly disregarded receiving crew. And of course, the reigning MVP of the league, Adrian Peterson crushing the ball, which of course forces teams to play stiff on the running game, which means teams have to respect both aspects of the game, it could be a very rousing season for Minnesota fans.
Question is, will Ponder be able to deliver? Because the Vikings have had a lack of several WR threats, this is the year for Ponder to prove his worth as the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft. Jennings ought to see more one on one opportunity, as well as Rudolph getting situations with LB coverage. And the sure handed, swift Jarius Wright with quick slants.
Ponder who has been coming along at a decent pace, so far in his 27 game career, needs to bring it to the next level. Matt Cassel getting signed I think actually puts a cool demand on Ponder. Good pressure, to let him know; it’s time to make this your team, lead them. Cassel may not be a superstar, but he is competent of playing well enough, especially with his size and his usual respectable passing ability. People tend to forget a few short injuries less seasons ago; Cassel was a 27 TD passer.
Greg Jennings signing with Minnesota, is just an additional case of a top notch WR getting an opening to move on, Green Bay isn’t going to miss him as much as some may think, they are overstocked with skilled WRs, with Randall Cobb, James Jones, and Jordy Nelson
The NFC North looks as if it’s going to be a monster division so far. Every team in the North is making moves to make strong strides forward, and we haven’t even hit the draft yet.
