The New England Patriots have not had solid group and strong wide receivers seriously since Randy Moss was snagging TDs there in 07-09.
The Patriots have always known for adapting the team and adapting their game to what works best. Right when the league feels to have them figured out they alter their scheme.
Recently over the last 3 years they have obviously gone with the 2 TE system which has proven to be extremely productive and efficient between Gronkowski and the now seriously troubled Aaron Hernandez. They caught 362 receptions, 56 TDs, and 4619 yards between the 2 of them in that period. But now, with the issues they have, they certainly don't have a load of firepower catching the ball.
For the Patriots, I think Danny Amendola is a fantastic grab to replace Wes Welker and his 120 catches/season. As always though Amendola’s problem has been staying healthy which is proven by missing 20 games over the last 2 seasons. But I do think that he very likely can end up with 90+ catches on the year.
As far as the Jets go, their problems are much, much deeper. Not only do they have major quarterback issues of who is going to be delivering the ball to the receivers, but who's going to be catching the ball as well. The best receiver right now on the team is injury riddled, Santonio Holmes who has been acceptable at best over his last 3 seasons in the NFL. So without question, the Jets are nowhere near the park of this conversation.
Of course then we have the always mediocre Buffalo Bills, another team going through so many transitions with the new quarterback at the helm. They do have more talent than the Jets with Stevie Johnson and young T.J. Graham also catching passes, and they have prospective to be an interesting group. But is it enough to make other defenses nervous when lining up to defend them? I’m thinking no.
Keep in mind again they likely will have Kevin Kolb throwing the ball around in Buffalo, New York. A lot will be discovered from the season in Buffalo, who I think, can possibly be the better team from New York in the AFC East.
Then we come to the Miami Dolphins, who made some nice moves in the offseason, the biggest pick up obviously was Mike Wallace who immediately will impact the long ball game in Miami. Ryan Tannehill has the skills and certainly proved me wrong in my initial thoughts of what he could do in the NFL. Do I think he can be capable of 4000 passing YDs? It is a possibility, but I don't know. But I do think he can put up 20 or 25 TD passes in a season, especially with Mike Wallace’s blazing speed. Changing defenses on the field picking up 17 YPG is devastating for corners and safeties that have to be pulled over to defend them.
Which obviously, opens up a lot of room for some of the other guys, like Brian Hartline, that said, he’s had 183 catches and only 6 touchdowns and 2753 YDS receiving over the last 4 years. Including his best season in 2009, when he had 3 touchdowns, only 31 catches for 506 YDs.
On paper, the Miami Dolphins appear to have the best receiving crew in the AFC East, even better than the almighty New England Patriots. Who have dominated and owned that division for years.
The problem is, the game is not decided on paper, only on Sundays when it is won between the lines. Nothing will matter until the Dolphins prove they’re ready to take on the champs in their division.
Personally, I think that the passing game of the Dolphins can really be very dangerous, especially if they do a lot of 3 WR sets.
They can really truly make defenses very concerned especially if rookie running back Lamar Miller ends up to be 70 percent of what they hope for. That’ll just bring that much more, including dangerous screen threats for the Miami Dolphins. Who I think can make a strong run for the division title
The Dolphins also have Brandon Gibson who had 5 touchdowns last year, which was pretty good, for someone who only had 82 targets, with the Rams. But I think he has better potential even now.
The Dolphins have the best receiving squad in the AFC East; let’s see if I am proved to be wrong.
