The Philadelphia Eagles Resolution, Part 3 (By Mike Handzelek)

By: Point Shaver Handzelek     Date: Nov 29, 2012
Print Article

My last installment hinted that the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (yes, Andy Reid is finally fired) will be someone whose rich with experience and has won the big one. He's also a man who played QB at 5'8" in the 80's with Dayton. He has 23 years of coaching experience and previously coached as an assistant under both George Seifert and Mike Holmgren. Any clue yet? My last 2 clues are he was an offensive coordinator of these same Philadephia Eagles between 1995-97 under then coach Ray Rhodes and has a Super Bowl ring. It's time to say, "Mr. Lurie -- the envelope please." The next football coach of the 2013-14 Philadelphia Eagles is Jon Gruden. Why pick Gruden? He's been in this situation before. In 2002, Gruden also inherited a challenged franchise when he took over for Tony Dungy. Gruden embraced the situation by retooling the Tampa Bay offense by signing key free agents to resurrect an overall losing franchise. What was the result? He took his brand spanking new squad and soundly beat his ex-squad in Oakland at Super Bowl XXXVII. What has led Gruden to an unemployed NFL coaching status, being a host for Jon Gruden's Football Camp and has him as a current color analyst for ESPN on Monday Night Football telecasts since 2009? My answer is a lack of defense. In December 2008 with the Buccaneers 9-3, Gruden was fired after Tampa Bay lost their remaining 4 regular season games where his defense got shredded for 31 PPG. I think this was a result of then-owner Rich McKay's horrible draft choices forced upon Gruden along with facing difficult salary cap issues. McKay had his only scapegoat. Instead of pointing the finger at himself, the former University of Tennessee graduate assistant was thrown under the bus. How will this change this time around? I believe current owner Jeff Lurie knows when to back down and let the coach whose been there select a team in place by properly filling draft picks and free agent spots to fill the void. I expect him to also re-hire Juan Castillo as defensive coordinator and maybe obtain Rich Bisaccia as special teams coordinator if he's let go by San Diego. Gruden may have to work out some kinks with family life in Tampa and his contract with ESPN. Once that's finished, he'll focus on the naturally attractive big market in which Philadelphia makes the most noise. Raider lineman Grady Jackson may have called him "Chucky". Frank Caliendo may impersonate him all he wants. But in the end, this Sandusky, Ohio native with South Bend, Indiana roots makes perfect sense as being the missing link at the Linc for the Philadephia Eagles. By Mike Handzelek
