Will it be majorly attractive signing with the Eagles as head coach for next season? It won't be as attractive as having QB Ron "The Polish Rifle" Jaworski, RB Wilbert Montgomery & WR Harold "Hoagy" Carmichael. Those 3 playmakers were on hand when the Eagles took a trip to the Super Bowl over 30 years ago. What's in back of the mind of Jeff Lurie when selecting his new man in town? I think he has his private chalk board with one side labeled "Jim Harbaugh type" and the other labeled "Bobby Petrino type" written at the top. I've been hearing through the Philly buzz that Oregon's Chip Kelly and Stanford's David Shaw have been given more than just that first glance. Both have come a long way. Chip Kelly got his start in the Ivy League as Columbia's freshman secondary/special teams coach in 1990. David Shaw started back in 1995 as outside linebackers coach for Western Washington but did serve as the Eagles quality control coach in 1997. Since passion sometimes impedes reason, hiring a college coach might be a serious lean since the recent successes of former college coaches like Jim Harbaugh at San Francisco and Greg Schiano at Tampa Bay are in plain sight. I don't agree. A successful history by former college coaches in the NFL have been few and far between. I'm not trying to take anything away from what Kelly & Shaw have accomplished, but there are already teams who run the spread-run game like Buffalo and ones who run the spread-pass game like New England. I think it's more feasible for an owner to stand up at that first big press conference to say he's not only hiring a coach whose rich in experience but also one who has won the big one. There's not too many coaches who still want to coach with those credentials. It's a win-win situation for Lurie if he hires this type of coach since it not only makes sense but rejuvenates a dissolving fan base with new excitement. Starting over can be a giant step in restoring stability. My second choice for the Eagles job is Atlanta OC & ex-Oregon OC Dirk Koetter. In Part 3, I'll make my top selection for the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. (By Mike Handzelek)
