While it seems like a herculean task, the state of the franchise in Philadelphia does have a resolution that can put them back on the map in the NFL. First, let's start at the beginning of the Andy Reid era in 1999. Owner Jeff Lurie fires Ray Rhodes after the 1998 season & names Reid head coach. He then takes over a team who gets the second overall pick in the draft. How was that possible? I think it was largely due because too many free agents put up a big PASS sign on Philadelphia since it meant practicing in the dilapidated confines of 30-year-old+ Veterans Stadium. This time around, Lurie must face the possible resurrection of the franchise without the input of Tom Modrak and Joe Banner. Instead, he will rely heavily on general manager Howie Roseman and some key phone calls to experienced brain trust. Do you think they find the letting go of HC Andy Reid the answer? I think that's where they have to start. In doing so, the beloved moustached walrus should go out with respect. Besides 5 conference championships & 9 playoff appearances in 14 years, he was the only Philly coach to dominate the Cowboys going 17-10 in his tenure. That was a prerequisite on the resume' of the what-have-you-done-for-us-lately boo-bird faithful. This won't be an easy task for Lurie. Since Lurie fired Rhodes in 1998, there's been 117 new coaches amongst the NFL's other 31 franchises. In fact, the Raiders have gone through 8 while the Redskins and Dolphins have ran 6 through the mill since that time. How does Lurie lure someone to take over a franchise whose literally under the bus? The answer has to be a hard-nosed, no nonsense coach that will still accept input into some player personnel decisions. The city of brotherly love is fortunated that Jeff Lurie is not Jerry Jones and he won't be making excuses to move the team to Allentown if ticket sales remain down. Part 2 unveils the coaching solution. By Mike Handzelek
