NFL MVP 2013

By: Frank Jordan     Date: Jan 4, 2014
Print Article

The regular season is over and as we gear up for the playoffs lets reflect on the regular season and who should be considered for MVP. There are a few front runners: Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson and Jamal Charles along with an outsider, Tom Brady.

Peyton Manning is the obvious choice in this because of the gaudy numbers in setting six records including: 55 TD passes, 5, 477 passing yards, 606 total points scored by a team in a season, 9 games with at least 4 TD passes, tied with 4 games of 400 yard passing games, tied with 3 games scoring 50 points. With all of that Manning led the Broncos to a 13-3 record, division title, and number one seed in the AFC.

Russell Wilson put up some good numbers and led the Seahawks to the best record in the NFC with a 13-3 mark and home field advantage. Seattle was 7-1 at home and overall had a +186 point differential. Wilson threw for 63%, 3,357 yards, 26 TD passes and only 9 interceptions. In addition, Wilson was a threat with his legs rushing for 539 yards and a TD. Looking deeper into the numbers Wilson had fewer interceptions that Manning, was in the top 10 with 26 TD passes, and the top 5 with over 8 yards per attempt.

Jamal Charles shouldered the load for the 11-5 Kansas City Chiefs who a year ago were a team that finished 2-14. In 2012, Charles had 1,509 rushing yards, 35 catches, and 236 receiving yards. This year, Charles had 1,287 rushing yards, 70 catches, and 693 receiving yards. The 2013 season of 1,980 total yards was more impressive than the 2012 season of 1,745 total yards. Though, Charles biggest improvement was going from 6 total TDs in 2012 to a league high of 19 total TDs in 2013. Under new head coach, Andy Reid, Charles was able connect with Alex Smith and lead the Chiefs into the playoffs.

Tom Brady certainly didn’t put up mega Peyton Manning numbers nor did he lead his team to a perfect regular season like he has done before, but led the team to the division title with a 12-4 record and a first round bye in the playoffs. The impressive or MVP worthy part is he did it without Hernandez and all those distractions, without Welker who left for Denver, without Gronk for 9 games and really without any solid consistent offensive weapons at all. Brady, in spite of those obstacles still managed the second most points scored in the AFC with a total of 444 points.

Bottom line, this is an offensive driven league and the player with the best offensive numbers should hold the MVP title. Hands down, the MVP winner should be the Bronco’s Peyton Manning. Peyton’s stats blow out all others and had the best record and point differential in the league. The 2013 season is Peyton’s year and everyone else is playing for second best in this race. Peyton lead the league in: completions (450), attempts (659), passing yards (5,477), TD Passes (55), and yards per game (342). Along with being the best, Peyton was also in the top three in completion percentage (68.3%), yards per attempt (8.31), and QBR (115.1). Numbers never lie and these numbers are all shouting Peyton Manning MVP 2013. Peyton should of won it last year, but you can’t fault Adrian Peterson for earning the MVP title with 2,000 yards rushing and willing his team into the playoffs. However, this year it is all Peyton Manning no doubt about it!
