Kentucky Derby 2013

By: Chase Diamond     Date: May 3, 2013
Print Article

In many horse racing fans opinions the greatest race of them all is set to place this Saturday, May 4th. It is the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby. The Churchill Downs track is 1 ¼ miles long and the first leg for any horse hoping to win the elusive Triple Crown, which has not been won since 1978. Watch this Saturday and you will see why this is the most exciting two minutes in sports. As of now there are 20 horses set to compete barring any last second pull outs. Orb is the odds on favorite to win this year’s Derby. He currently is at 7-2 odds and is trained by Claude McGaughey III and will be ridden by Joel Rosario. Orb enters the Derby on a 4 four-race winning streak. That streak includes a win over Itsmyluckyday who enters the Derby at 15-1 odds. Verrazano is another strong favorite to win this Saturday. He is currently at 4-1 odds. The Hall of Fame jockey riding Verrazano will be John Velazquez. Velazquez is looking to add to his Kentucky Derby mantle. He won the 2011 Derby with Animal Kingdom. He has finally returned to riding on May 1st after nursing some injuries he sustained after an April 7th fall at the Aqueduct Racetrack. He will be all ready to go for this Saturday though. Goldencents, currently at 5-1 odds, is going to be the hometown favorite in this race. Why you might ask? One of Goldencents partial owners is Rick Pitino who coached the Louisville Cardinals to their NCAA Championship in basketball. Goldencents will be saddled by Kevin Krigger who is just the second African American to compete in the Derby since 1921. This is certainly an impressive field of 3 year olds. Twenty horses and a purse of $2,199,800 is a lot to get excited about. I have given you a little background of the top 3 favorites for this Saturday but here is my prediction. Winner: Normandy Invasion 12-1 He was impressive at the Wood Memorial. If he can stay free of traffic he can come out on top. A good start will be key for him. Place: Orb 7-2 He might be the hottest horse coming into the Derby. He will have an impressive showing but I feel will come up just short. Show: Revolutionary 10-1 Another hot horse. Has won 3 in a row and looked impressive in training. Enjoy the race!
