Over the last 3 seasons the Green Bay Packers have become the kings of the NFC North. Aaron Rodgers has taken the team under his wing and led them to a 76% win percentage, as the starter, going 35-11, as well as a Super Bowl championship, and he, by the way, won the MVP of the league award in 2011.
Aaron Rodgers has been simply remarkable, during this period. With 12,999 YDs, 103 TDs, a completion rate of 66%, and only 24 ints thrown over the last 3 seasons, is something that very few could even fathom the thought of.
Aaron Rodgers climbed the mountain to superstar status without difficulty. Coming out of California in 2005, he was bypassed by, of course, now notoriously, San Francisco at the 1st pick, and fell to the Pack at the 24th slot, and several other teams, looking back, who could have used a QB, like Tampa Bay, Tennessee, and Miami. The beginning of the inevitable torch handing was in process from Favre to Rodgers, even though Favre never really was quite ready to acknowledge his time was nearing. The handing down of one’s throne is never an easy one to do, but Favre eventually was overthrown and deposited outside of the conference. Overall, for Green Bay, the transition, I feel went smoothly. Rodgers stepped in as the QB of the future in 2008 and hasn’t looked back, his 1st season throwing for 28 TDs and 4000+ YDs, and a 93.8 QB rating.
The RBs that have been squared up behind Rodgers over the last several seasons have never blossomed. In fact, Aaron has actually ranked 3rd or better on the team in rushing yards in each of the last 3 seasons. Not necessarily a good thing for a team. It shows a glaring weakness, backfield help is tremendously central.
Obviously Rodgers has shown the skill to make average players good and good players great. Which is excellent to have, he has talent around him on the offensive end for him to throw to, but other than that, where else is their help?
The team on defense, over the last 3 seasons, has been around the average of 19/game to opponents, ranking them around 9th overall in the NFL over that same period, and they are slipping. They had one tremendous season in 2010 when they had Clay Matthews leading them with 13.5 sacks, and Tramon Williams with 6 ints.
But the team has certainly become more accustomed to shootouts, which is a great commodity to have if need be, but it shouldn’t be a characteristic night. That can wear down your team as well as put more stress on them as well, bringing panic in a potential 14-10 game. Over the last 3 seasons, the Pack have a 3-5 record when scoring 17 or less pts.
They need RB support in Green Bay. Signing Cedric Benson was nice, but he is still the big 3-0. He might get them 5 TDs and perhaps 750 YDs. Their last first-rate RB was Ryan Grant, in 2009 when he scored 11 TDs, and 1253 YDs.
Although Rodgers is a brilliant master on the field, the Pack rely too much on him to win their games. Either by him throwing, or running the ball. He is everything for them for the team’s success. And they will carry on winning many more games with him, but they definitely need to shore up on the defensive side of the ball again, and get some consistant RB help.
