The Vikings have had their issues with their oft disgruntled WR Percy Harvin, over the last 4 seasons. Unfortunately it comes a time where things need to be looked at for Minnesota. And of course, comes the question now and will be during the off season drama-capades, what are the Vikings going to do with Percy Harvin?
Percy needs to grow up and become a leader on this team. His numbers are excellent, to say the least. We are talking about a guy who gets you 160 total yards a game, including kickoff returns, who has fiery playmaking ability like very few others in the NFL, as well as an amazing kick returner as well (5 returns in his short career, and a whopping 27.9 return avg.)
He is a top talent, without question, but what is he worth to Minnesota? His talent is vital to them, and I think maybe Harvin should take a little extra time to hang with teammate, and MVP Adrian Peterson to get a sentiment about team play, hard work and having a yearning that needs to be filled only by succeeding. One player doesn’t win the Super Bowl, although the way the media represents things, sometimes one would think that, but it’s not, and football is the apex of team sports.
Harvin is coming into his final year of his contract, and I think the majority of Viking fans desire to see the dynamic WR stay put. Minnesota has cash to play with this offseason; and they are truthfully not that far from becoming a serious Super Bowl challenger. If they could get their hands on talented Dwayne Bowe (coming off a down year with 801 YDs), Greg Jennings (coming off an injury riddled season and only 8 games), or even deep ball threat Devery Henderson (where the Saints have just way too many options to throw to, but he can still open up a field, 17.9 career YPC, and he wouldn’t cost too much) I think they would all be good fits to stretch the field.
Jarius Wright is a lesser version of Harvin and his playing fashion, and I would adore seeing more work with them both on the field at the same time, and see a game of 4 yard outs and letting them bolt off on each grab. And Wright certainly showed he could play last season with 22 catches, 310 yards, 2 TDs, and a very nice 14.1 YPC.
It’s tough to trade talent like Harvin away. Minnesota went to the playoffs even without him for the last 7 games (going 5-2), which says a few things single-handedly. First, the team is better than most people believe, possibly Percy himself. Secondly, even without him, they still did in fact; win, even if it was more difficult.
Ponder used Harvin great last year, seeing 85 targets in 9 games (9/game), and he was truly the only really dangerous weapon on the team, because of his open field elusiveness. Ponder is coming into that big season, his 3rd in the league, where most feel the QB has to be where they ought to be, Christian Ponder was a development, most agreed on, and he had improved from 2011 to 2012. But if Harvin would leave, I think it could perhaps set him back a bit, after playing with him and getting used to him as his WR1.
Personally, players like Harvin don’t come around all the time, pay him, lock him up, and let the Vikes start their team moving in the direction of a Super Bowl. I don’t think Harvin goes anywhere, with Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Kyle Rudolph, and if they get their mitts on a WR in free agency. Minnesota could be a likely divisional favorite going into next season.
