Chris Andrews Woke Up The Echoes (By Mike Handzelek)

By: Point Shaver Handzelek     Date: Nov 26, 2012
Print Article

Over the past week, I was listening to a discussion on the Nov. 25th Atlanta-Tampa Bay game when I heard Chris Andrews from Vegas mention it was 50 years ago (before Matt Ryan's 5 INT's in Wk. 11 vs. Atlanta) since a QB threw 5 INT's with no TD passes & still won the game. Chris woke up the echoes for me since I was watching the game with my dad, Jake who broke me in to the NFL early. It was actually 1967 when it happened last but I remember it because of many things that stood out. First, it was the last time HC's George "Papa Bear" Halas & Vince Lombardi would ever coach a game @ Lambeau Field against each other. Second, the announcers kept talking about how uncharacteristic a Lombardi-coached team was that day. Bart Starr did not only throw 5 INT's in just 19 attempts (3 to Richie Petitbon) but GB also turned it over a Lombardi-coached record 8 times with 3 lost fumbles that day. Lombardi played ground and pound implementing his "run to daylight" philosophy 51 times for 233 yards. Unfortunately for the Pack, the Bear defenders like Dick Butkus & Doug Buffone were good at stripping the ball. Nevertheless, the trio of RB's Jim Grabowski, Donny Anderson & Elijah Pitts were the best in the game. Third, a big reason why Green Bay stayed in the game despite 8 turnovers was due to Bear QB Jack Concannon going down with an injury. Concannon (who Chicago got in a trade with Philadephia for TE Mike Ditka) was replaced by Georgia product Larry Rakestraw who was shut down as the Pack limited Chicago to just 19 passing yards on the day. Lastly, I was also drawn to this game to watch the beauty of RB Gale Sayers (had 63 yards of Chicago's 140 on the ground) who could break one at any time from the line of scrimmage as well as on a punt or kickoff return. This game went to the wire as the difference was a missed Mac Percival FG that gave GB a miraculous but sloppiest ever 13-10 win. As far as I know, this was the only time an NFL team with 8 turnovers won a game. For me,s ports were larger than life back in the 60's when I learned to have an "eye for detail" before I was 10. Chris Andrews woke up the echoes for me and I thought I'd share that game with you. Thanks Chris, Mike Handzelek
