Best NFL Matchups Of The Week: October 17-20th

The NFL season continues to take on new dimensions and hues. The nature of an autumnal Sunday is never quite the same as the previous one. So much seems to be in a state of flux.

Seattle Seahawks @ Arizona Cardinals

This is a Thursday night game the Seahawks need to win in order to show that they are a contender for one of the top two seeds in the NFC playoffs. Seattle has been shaky on the road all season, much as it was in 2012 as well. This team simply responds differently on the road compared to the way in which it plays at home. The Seahawks scored just 12 points in their road opener at Carolina. They fell behind the Houston Texans (who aren’t very good) by a 20-3 score before rallying to win in Texas. They lost to Indianapolis after blowing an early 12-0 lead. They just don’t perform all that well on the road. This game against Arizona will be a challenge because Seattle’s offensive line is injury-riddled, and Arizona’s defensive front is fairly physical. The Seahawks have to show that they can run the ball even when opposing defenses expect them to.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Detroit Lions

This is a fascinating matchup between two teams that are 4-2, but don’t look like particularly powerful sides. Cincinnati barely beat a Buffalo Bills team that was playing a quarterback who did not start the season in the top two of the depth chart. Detroit struggled for three quarters against a Cleveland team quarterbacked by Brandon Weeden before finally pulling away late. This is a significant game, which is precisely why the Bengals and Lions – two teams that don’t handle big situations very well – are going to be challenged.

New England Patriots @ New York Jets

This is the second and – likely – last meeting of the season between the Patriots and Jets, who faced each other in week two. The Patriots won that game, but barely, scraping out a three-point escape job. New England quarterback Tom Brady should be able to play at a much higher level against the Jets this time around. He has developed a better relationship with his receivers. New York quarterback Geno Smith struggled this past week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is hard to expect him to solve New England’s defense.
