The Midwest will be on display on both the college and NBA hardwood this week. Here’s a look at three of the best roundball games this week:
NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional Semifinal:
Tennessee Volunteers vs. Michigan Wolverines (Friday)
This game in Indianapolis will be a matchup of two different kinds of teams. Tennessee is a team that got on a roll late in the season and is playing with a new form of confidence. Michigan is a team that solved its problems in January and has been steadily good throughout 2014. Tennessee is a team with a lot of width and muscle. The Vols like to get the ball inside and will challenge Michigan a lot in the post. Michigan, on the other hand, will want to spread the floor and set up its shooters for three-point attempts. These are two different teams, and that will make this game interesting.
NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional Semifinal:
Kentucky Wildcats vs. Louisville Cardinals (Friday)
So many people were looking forward to a matchup between Louisville and Wichita State. The Shockers, going up against Rick Pitino and the defending national champions, would have made for a hyped game. College basketball will have to settle for a game between two of the great schools in the sport, an all-Kentucky matchup that will be very important for people in that state. This is a rematch of a regular season game from late December in which Kentucky won on its home court. The Harrison twins, Andrew and Aaron, played well in that game, and Louisville didn't have an answer. The Cardinals were also sluggish on offense on that day, and they'll need to get a good performance from one of their perimeter players.
NBA: Portland Trail Blazers @ Chicago Bulls (Friday)
This is a very attractive matchup in the Windy City. Portland has been playing less impressively as the season has gone by, and Chicago has been more and more resilient as the season has gone along. Portland's dip in quality and Chicago's rise in terms of excellence should make for a very even matchup, one between two teams that should enter this game on even footing. Portland's offense still averages over 107 points per game, one of the best marks in the league, while Chicago's points-allowed average is still in the low 90s, making it one of the best averages in basketball. How Chicago's offense does against Portland's defense is what might decide this game.
