2011 NFL Predictions: Division Winners

By:     Date: Aug 23, 2011
Print Article

NFC North Champion: Green Bay Packers – Many forget the Super Bowl champion Packers didn’t win the NFC North division last season. They should knock that one off the list this year. Green Bay defeated the NFC North champion Chicago Bears in the NFC title game. One thing was evident in that game. The Packers had Aaron Rodgers and the Bears didn’t. That simple fact alone gives the Pack the edge in the division race this season. NFL odds makers have listed the Packers at -190 to win the NFC North.

NFC South Champion: New Orleans Saints – The Saints came up short in their bid to repeat as Super Bowl champs, which means they should enter the 2011 with plenty of motivation and focus. An offense that ranked sixth in the NFL with 372.5 yards per game should hum again with Drew Brees under center. Turnovers were a big issue last year, and Brees, who had 22 passes picked off, was as guilty as anyone. I can’t see him making as many mistakes in 2011. The Saints are listed at +130 to win the NFC South.

NFC East Champion: Philadelphia Eagles – A surprise breakout season by Michael Vick helped the Eagles capture their sixth NFC East title under Andy Reid. Vick, who started the season as the backup, had career highs in passer rating (100.2), completion percentage (62.6) and touchdown-to-interception ratio (21/6). With the additions of Jason Babin, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Cullen Jenkins, Vince Young, Nnamdi Asomugha and Ronnie Brown, the Eagles are the clear favorite in their division. They are listed at -140 to win the NFC East.

NFC West Champion: St. Louis Rams – The NFC West, which was won by a 7-9 Seattle Seahawks squad last year, is wide open again. The Seahawks have made a number moves, including bringing in quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and wide receiver Sidney Rice, in hopes of repeating as division champs. The Arizona Cardinals are hoping the addition of quarterback Kevin Kobb can help them with their third division title in four seasons. And the San Francisco 49ers are hoping Jim Harbaugh can work magic like he did at Stanford. While any of these franchises can win the division, I believe the St. Louis Rams will ultimately wear the crown. Rookie quarterback Sam Bradford led the Rams to seven wins in 2010 while throwing to a mediocre-at-best receiving corps. That’s impressive stuff considering the Rams only won one game the year before. Look for Bradford and the Rams to take the next step and win the division this year. The Rams are listed at +165 to win the NFC West.

AFC North Champion: Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens haven’t won the AFC North since 2006, but I think that is about to change. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have won the division three of the last four years, may technically be the team to beat since they advanced to the Super Bowl last season, but they haven’t fared well following Super Bowl appearances. They have failed to make the playoffs following each of their last two trips to the NFL championship game. The Steelers will be driven after failing to hoist the Lombardi Trophy this time, but so will the Ravens, who were knocked out of the postseason by Pittsburgh. Quarterback Joe Flacco, who threw for 3,622 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, appears ready to take his place among the league’s elite signal callers. He, more than any other player, must come up big in matchups against Pittsburgh for the Ravens to win the division. I believe he will. Baltimore is listed at +115 to win the AFC North.

AFC South Champion: Indianapolis Colts – The Colts are coming off yet another division title, their seventh since the AFC South was formed in 2002. They have recorded 10 wins or more in nine straight seasons, making the playoffs each of those years. The Colts will continue to be the cream of the crop in the AFC South as long as Peyton Manning is playing at a high level. Manning is coming off another very impressive campaign. He completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 4,700 yards with 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. These numbers look even more impressive when you consider the way defenses went after him last year. Injuries took away any threat of a running game and allowed foes to play the pass exclusively. Expect Manning to lead the Colts to yet another division title. Indy is listed at +105 to win the AFC South.

AFC East Champion: New England Patriots – The Pats have ruled the AFC East and should continue to do so as long as Tom Brady is healthy. The Michigan product is coming off an impressive season that saw him throw for 3,900 yards with 36 touchdowns and four interceptions. The Pats should enter the 2011 season with plenty of motivation following a home loss to division rival New York in last year’s playoffs. They should be further motivated by the fact they’ve now gone three years without a playoff victory. The Jets are on the rise, but Brady’s will to win should bring home another AFC East title to Foxborough. The Patriots are listed at -150 to win the AFC East.

AFC West Champion: San Diego Chargers – The Bolts won’t be lacking any motivation after failing to reach the postseason for the first time since 2005. They have won four of the last five AFC West titles and should sit atop the division again if they can limit turnovers and special teams miscues. That’s because they led the NFL in both total offense and total defense in 2010. The Bolts are listed at -200 to win the AFC West.
