Young Talent Running Rampant in MLB

By: Michael Black     Date: Jun 30, 2011
Print Article

It seems like there hasn’t been any new BIG names to appear in baseball since Ryan Braun and Evan Longoria. This year young talent is popping up all over the league. It all started last year when Stephen Strasburg made his debut in June. I hadn’t seen a kid have such an impressive debut since LeBron James, especially when you consider what the level of expectation was on him. Strasburg allowed 4 hits and struck out 14 in the most memorable Washington Nationals game in franchise history. It wasn’t just pitching that showcased young talent. Outfielder Jason Heyward impressed all for the Braves batting .277, hitting 18 home runs, 72 RBI’s, and an on-base % of .393. Catcher Buster Posey was a vital factor to the Giants winning the World Series. Posey batted .305, hit 18 long balls, and drove in 67. His injury has definitely hindered the Giants this year. Other emergences came from Florida’s Mike Stanton and the Cubs’ Starlin Castro, both are having MONSTER years this year. Castro is batting .314 and Stanton already has 16 dingers. This year, it’s like they’re multiplying, pitchers and batters are popping up everywhere. The AL West has two of the best young arms in the game, Seattle’s 22 year old Michael Pineda and the Rangers’ Alexi Ogando. Both guys have 7 wins and sub 3 ERAs, pretty impressive. Tampa’s Jeremy Hellickson deserves an honorable mention, always impressive to see a young arm with a 3.00 ERA in the AL East. Over the last month three more guys have been called up and all have had impressive beginnings to their careers, Oakland’s Jemile Weeks, little brother of Rickie Weeks, Seattle’s Dustin Ackley, and now Cleveland’s Lonnie Chisenhall. After a stagnant period of no new big names it’s exciting to see some new talent throughout the league.
