WEEK 5 COLLEGE FOOTBALL MOTIVATIONAL SPOTS
Any oddsmaker will tell you that in college football it’s not what teams are playing each other, but WHEN they are playing each other. That means that the biggest impact on the outcome of games is situational and motivational factors. Here are this week’s motivational spots in college football.
PITTSBURGH - The Panthers got embarrassed in a featured primetime weekday game last week at home. They should be motivated to bounce back this week, but I don’t trust Dave Wannstadt as a coach in the spot of a big favorite against a weak opponent. The Panthers haven’t done well in that spot over the last few years.
GEORGIA TECH - They were embarrassed at home to N.C. State last week, so they will likely want to play well this week. Paul Johnson is a great coach, and his teams usually don’t have back-to-back bad games.
NOTRE DAME - The Irish suffered another loss last week to Stanford. Notre Dame desperately needs a win here due to three straight losses. A fourth loss would be very detrimental to Brian Kelly’s first season as the Notre Dame coach.
ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide have a tough situation of playing two straight big games with playing Arkansas last week and now Florida this week. However, if any coach will have their team ready then it would be Nick Saban. It will be interesting to see how they respond this week against the Gators.
BYU - The Cougars suffered another bad loss last week, this time against Nevada, a team that they usually would dominate. BYU absolutely needs a strong showing this week after three straight bad losses to Air Force, Florida State, and Nevada. They play a weaker team this week in Utah State, but it is still a road game where the Aggies will be very fired up to take on a big name team on national television.
GEORGIA - The Bulldogs are in the same spot as BYU. They are not used to playing this poorly, and they must show up this week. However, they are also playing a road game as a favorite against a team that will be very fired up to face them.
LSU - Tough sandwich spot here for the Tigers, as they are coming off of a good win last week against West Virginia and have a tough road game next week at Florida. This week they are playing Tennessee as a big favorite. The Volunteers aren’t a very good team though and they may not even score more than a touchdown.
MICHIGAN / MICHIGAN STATE - Both teams have a huge in-state rivalry game next week. That game is one of the most important on the schedule of both teams.
FLORIDA STATE - The Seminoles have enjoyed a few good games recently. However they have one of their biggest games of the season next week against Miami. Florida State gets to face one of the weaker teams in the ACC in Virginia this week, but that game is on the road. Virginia is only a touchdown underdog though, meaning that Florida State essentially just has to win and play decent to tie or win this game from a point spread perspective.
