Tressel's Resignation=Death to the Big 10

By: Michael Black     Date: May 30, 2011

Jim Tressel stepped down from Ohio State this morning. After allegations of players selling merchandise for money and tattoos and not coming forward with the information, Ohio State gave the ultimatum to resign or be fired. Tressel chose to save face and resign. We're at the tip of the iceberg on this investigation and I can only imagine how many other former players will now come forward with their stories. The rumor is at least 2 years without a bowl game, but it could be worse. Loss of scholarships won't help and that looks to be at least 10-15 players a year. Experts are saying that Ohio State will survive this and bounce back after a few years, but I'm not so sure about that. The SEC and Big XII have become more and more aggressive with recruiting in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio. Maybe some kids want to stay close to home, but that's becoming the only argument for these Big 10 coaches in recruiting. With the recent downfall of Michigan, Grandpa Joe at Penn State, and now at least a 5 year hiatus in Columbus, I just don't see the appeal of the conference. Wisconsin was great last year but lost every star player and is going to be rebuilding. The one team that's going to be carrying the conference is newcomer Nebraska. If they didn't have the Cornhuskers that conference would be desperately looking for some one to carry the weight. It will be interesting to see how that conference does over the next few years.
