Steve Merril's Sunday Night MLB Preview (Dodgers/Reds)

The Reds and Dodgers play an intriguing National League contest on Sunday Night Baseball.

HOMER HAPPY

Homer Bailey is a streaky pitcher for the Reds. He is 12-9 with a 3.82 ERA striking out 146 while walking only 49. Bailey has allowed just 5 earned runs in his last four starts striking out 26 while walking only 6 batters. Before that, the Bailey had allowed 22 runs over a five-start span. Bailey has been able to keep the walks down this season posting more than three just twice. He faced the Dodgers in Los Angeles back on July 2nd and he allowed 2 runs and five hits over eight innings. He struck out seven in that game while walking only one.

HARANG MEET YOUR FORMER TEAM

Aaron Harang takes on the Reds; he used to pitch for them early in his career. He is 9-10 with a 3.80 ERA striking out 125 while walking 79. Harang's issue has been control lately. He has walked more batters than posting strikeouts in three of his last four starts. The righty has been solid for the Dodgers recently giving up 3 runs or less in eight straight games. The problem is that he hasn't been able to go deep in ballgames. He has not reached the 7th inning since August 18th when he went six and two thirds. He faced the Reds at home on July 4th and beat them after giving up 1 run and three hits in seven innings.

INJURY REPORT

The Dodgers playoff hopes rest with the hip of Clayton Kershaw. His status will be big for a rotation that is lacking a stud ace. They had Ted Lilly and Chad Billingsley in the mix, but both are done for the season with shoulder and elbow injuries. The team is also without Adam Kennedy and Carl Crawford who will miss the rest of the season. The Reds injury list is a lot shorter although there is some concern with Aroldis Chapman who was dealing with shoulder fatigue. Their bullpen is without Nic Masset and Ryan Madson who have shoulder and elbow ailments of their own.

TRENDS

Dodgers are 0-4 in Harang’s last 4 Sunday starts Dodgers are 4-1-1 Under in their last 6 Sunday games Reds are 4-0 Over in Bailey’s last 4 starts vs. NL West Reds are 25-10 in their last 35 Sunday games

HITTERS TO WATCH

Ryan Ludwick is 14-for-36 vs. Harang Scott Rolen is 5-for-31 vs. Harang Adrian Gonzalez is 6-for-12 vs. Bailey Matt Kemp is 4-for-11 vs. Bailey
