No matter what happens Tuesday night in the MLS is Back Championship we will have a surprise winner as Orlando City SC takes on Portland Timbers FC in a battle of Cinderella’s. Orlando City entered the tournament as low as +5000 to win it all while Portland came in at +2800 before both teams won their groups. They have made it through a gauntlet of tough opponents and have gotten it done with strong defense and very timely goals.

These teams have met five times since Orlando City joined MLS with the Lions winning three, Portland winning one and they drew 1-1 last season.

Orlando City SC Outlook: Feed Nani

Orlando City saw their captain and designated player Nani do exactly what they paid him to do in the Thursday night 3-1 semifinal win over Minnesota United. The former Manchester United star used a superb first touch to thrash home the opener in the 36th minute before a golazo of a curler six minutes later made it 2-0. Minnesota scored late to get back in the game but Benji Michel put the match away six minutes into added time.

Nani has three goals and three assists in the tournament and two of his goals have been game winners, plus he scored the decider in the shootout win in the quarterfinal. Christopher Mueller also has three goals in the tournament while Tesho Akindele has two goals. Goalie Pedro Gallese has 17 saves and the defense hasn’t allowed more than one goal in any of the six games in the tournament with one clean sheet.

Orlando City has never won a MLS trophy and they didn’t even make the playoffs last season while conceding 52 goals. New manager Oscar Pareja has made a difference in that department, fixing the defense and he has a winning pedigree with a Supporters Shield and US Open Cup title while at FC Dallas.

Portland Timbers FC Outlook: Shut Down Nani

The Portland Timbers have the playoff pedigree that Orlando City are missing. Three players were with Portland to lift the 2015 MLS Cup and there are seven members remaining who marched through the 2018 Western Conference before falling in the MLS Cup to Atlanta United. Manager Giovanni Savarese will count on that experience to lift Timbers to the title Tuesday night.

Portland played without as much drama in the semifinals Wednesday as they built a 2-0 lead and held on to beat Philadelphia Union 2-1. Breakout star Jeremy Ebobisse scored in the 13th minute and tournament MVP candidate Sebastian Blanco doubled the lead in the 70th minute. Steve Clark made seven saves and nearly posted a clean sheet but the Union got on the board with five minutes to play.

Ebobisse has four goals in the tournament while Blanco has three goals and five assists to lead the offense. Diego Valeri and Jaroslaw Niezgoda each have two goals in the tournament while Valeri added an assist in the semifinals. Portland went 2-0-1 in the group stage to win Group F before knocking off FC Cincinnati in penalty kicks and thrashing NYCFC 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

Orlando City SC/Portland Timbers FC Betting Lines By Realbookies

Orlando City SC +145 to win

Portland Timbers FC FC +170 to win

Draw +245

Over/Under 2.5 goals (O -113, U -116)

Controlling the midfield is the key to this game, especially for Portland to deny space for Nani and Mueller to attack. The Timbers backline of Eryk Williamson and Diego Chara will be tested and if Orlando City wins, expect Nani to be tournament MVP. This should be a defensive struggle but look for Portland’s experience to win out in the end and claim the first-ever MLS is Back Tournament title.
