Interleague play is in full effect this weekend from Yankees Stadium in the Bronx. The Washington Nationals will make the short trip to New York for a three-game series with the Yankees. Both teams are not where they would want to be in the standings after five weeks of play. Therefore, this series is even more important for Washington and New York. 

On Saturday, Max Scherzer will throw against Corey Kluber. These two former Cy Young winners should create an epic pitching matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM ET.

Washington Nationals Preview

The Nationals have been recovering in the National League East over the past week. The team seems to be riding a hot streak heading into Saturday. A significant reason for this is the offensive production from Trea Turner and Starlin Castro.

These two have carried the load without Juan Soto in the lineup. Turner has defined consistency, slashing .320/.371/.546. He is also leading the team in home runs with six. Starlin Castro has been clutch with runners in scoring position.

Castro has driven in 13 RBIs, which leads the team. Juan Soto recently returned from the injured list, so expect him to start contributing. By the time he gets to the Bronx, he should be back into a routine.

New York Yankees Preview

It has been a weird start to the season for the Yankees. The team is hovering around .500. They have been good at times but bad throughout the year as well.

New York’s offense was designed to cover up the issues with the pitching staff to start the season. However, the Yankees’ bats got off to a very slow start. Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge have begun to take over, but the team is still lagging.

The Yankees are batting a combined .223 compared to the Nationals at .250. Washington does not have a good offense, so this is remarkable. Nevertheless, New York is making the climb towards the top of the American League.

Stanton has delivered time and time again after his slow start. He is slashing .297/.343/.545 with seven bombs and 18 RBIs.

The Matchup

New York does have the advantage at home in this game, even though they will face Scherzer. Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young winner, but his dominance seems to be fading. He is still a top-tier big league pitcher, but teams have been able to get hits off the veteran.

Scherzer has been vulnerable with the long ball. He has allowed seven homers this season. The Yankees will throw Corey Kluber, who has not been as good as Scherzer.

Nevertheless, he has given up four fewer homers than Scherzer, which could make the difference on Saturday. The Yankees’ momentum should help them jump out to a hot start against Scherzer.

The team cannot allow the ace to find a rhythm on the mound, or it could be a long day. I think New York gets on top early with some long balls and finds a way to win.
