September is easily the most dramatic month in the baseball regular season. Most of the posturizing to get involved in the post season is done now. The majority, if not all, of the rosters are going to be set for the postseason. August is the month that will let the contenders prove they are contenders and the pretenders fall behind for a boring last month of the season. Plan a head and look for a series that can be a winning proposition.
Favorable Schedules
Cincinnati Reds: The Reds are a blistering hot 15-3 since the All-Star break. The Reds will only face three teams for a total of eight games that have a winning record. The Reds were concerned when Joey Votto, their best player, went down with an injury at the beginning of their winning streak. The Reds offense has not skipped a beat; Ryan Ludwick has picked up some of the offensive slack since Votto hit the DL two weeks ago. Over the last 10 games, the Reds are hitting a healthy .283 and averaging 5.8 runs per game. The pitching staff will not have the wheels fall off this season with a stable of quality starters and a bullpen that slams games shut.
Atlanta Braves: With the Nationals out in front of baseball tied for the best record, the Braves are quietly making the up the wildcard ladder. The Braves are 13-5 since the all-star break and just 2 ½ games behind Washington. They have the opportunity to make up those games and take the lead in the division if they capitalize in August. The Braves don not play a team with a winning record until the 17th and they do not leave the Eastern Time Zone until the last week of the month. Atlanta will have to take care of the likes of the Marlins, Astros, and Padres before they play 10 straight games against the Dodgers, Nationals and the Giants. They will have to stay on their toes as the Cubs and the Phillies have the potential to play the role of spoilers.
Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers are a flat 9-9 since the All-Star break. They did sweep the Giants last weekend to move themselves back into first place in the NL West for a day. The Dodgers new front office kept their promise to spend money to make the Dodgers contenders. The Dodgers obtained the services of Hanley Ramirez and Shane Victorino to help Jeff Kemp and Andre Either. With the, Marlins twice, the Rockies twice and the Cubs, the Dodgers should keep pace with the Giants. The Dodgers need to come out with a winning record when they face the Braves, Giants and Nationals consecutively in the middle of the month. The Dodgers were not able to secure another big name starter to help as pitching staff that has been stellar, but possibly overused so far this season.
Not Favorable Schedules
St Louis Cardinals: The cardinals were 40/1 at the beginning of September last year before turning it around and going on to win the World Series. Even though the Cardinals are better off this time around with a record of 55-48, 9-8 since the all-star break, August will be a tell-all for their post season participation. The Cardinals will play 17 games on the road this month. They will have their work cut out for them having to play the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 3-game series on the road and at home. The Arizona Diamondbacks will be in town for a three games series. The NL West leading Giants will come in to play a four-game series early on. To finish the month, the redbirds will be on the road for three games at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Washington. If they come out of the month with a winning record, they will be in good shape to defend their crown.
Arizona Diamondbacks: The D-backs are playing better in the second half of the season with an 11-8 record. Arizona will spend 16 of their first 19 games on the road to start the month. Seven straight games will be played on the East Coast against the Phillies and the Pirates. Then they host the Nationals for three games before flying to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals. The Reds will come in for three games and they will end up the month where they started with a three-game series with the Dodgers.
Colorado Rockies: Known for their huge runs in the second half of the season; the Rockies will have to climb the equivalent of Mt Everest to get into the playoffs with their schedule in August. Realistically, the Rockies are out of the playoffs with a record of 37-64 overall and 4-11 in the second half of the season. The first 12 games of the season will be against the Giants twice, the Dodgers, and the Cardinals. They also end the season against the Dodgers. 17 of the games are at home for the month so the Rockies are a viable dog if they get on a hot streak at Coors Field.
