After dropping five straight postseason games, the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues had enough. The Blues have responded with two straight wins over Vancouver to even their first-round series at 2-2.

St. Louis head coach Craig Berube made the switch in goal pulling Jordan Binnington and going with Jake Allen. The result, of course, is two straight Blues’ victories.

Can they make it a third?

Game: Vancouver Canucks (41-29-7) vs. St. Louis Blues (44-22-12)

When: 10:30 PM ET, Wednesday, August 19, 2020

Where: Rogers Place, Edmonton, AB, Canada

Current Line: STL -140  Total: 5.5

TV Coverage:  NBCSN

Vancouver pretty much owned St. Louis this season until the last two games. Are you looking for premium picks? The Canucks beat the Blues way back in October at the beginning of the season, 4-3. Vancouver beat St. Louis again in January 3-1 and sandwiched in between in November was the Blues only victory (2-1) in the season series.

The two teams opened their first-round playoff series with Vancouver picking up where it left off in January. Bo Horvat, who had 22 goals during the regular season, scored twice in Game 1 as the Canucks won 5-2.

Horvat, who has six goals and eight points in the postseason, then did it again in Game 2. The Canucks center scored the first goal of Game 2 while Vancouver was shorthanded. He scored his second on a breakaway in overtime to give the Canucks the 4-3 win.

Where’s Jordan Binnington?

The Blues lost all three of their seeding games before starting the series with Vancouver. With Allen in goal, the Blues have responded and evened up the series.

It is unclear whether Allen or starter Jordan Binnington will be in goal on Wednesday night for the Blues. Whoever it is will likely have his hands full.

The Canucks are a team on the rise with Horvat, J.T. Miller (27 goals, 72 pts), and last year’s Calder Cup Trophy winner Elias Pettersson who leads Vancouver with nine playoff points.

The difference may very well be on special teams where the Blues have not been so great during the postseason. The Blues have converted just 17.9 percent of their power plays and the St. Louis penalty kill ranks 22nd out of the 24 teams in the playoffs.

Could Markstrom Be This Year’s Binnington?

On the other end, Vancouver goalie Jacob Markstrom is playing well despite the two losses in the last two games. Markstrom is 5-3 in the postseason and has a 2.75 goals against average and a .918 save percentage.

The Blues are just 2-5 in their last seven games and, while there isn’t a home-ice advantage in the Rogers Center bubble, the Blues are 0-5 in their last five games as the home team. St. Louis is the home team for Wednesday night’s game.

Vancouver is 5-2 straight up in its last seven games. The two losses, of course, were to the Blues in these NHL Playoffs. Over the last ten meetings with St. Louis, the Canucks have had their share of success going 6-1-3.

Given that success and the fact that the Canucks are +125 underdogs on the moneyline, we’re backing Vancouver in Game 5.
