NFL Draft in Review

By: Michael Black     Date: Apr 30, 2011
Print Article

The first three rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft are in the book. Now that the smoke has cleared and we’ve had a day to think about all 32 teams’ first half selections.

Some teams are setting up for Championship runs as soon as 2011. Others are setting up their future for two or three years from now. Other teams, however, including contenders, are falling short of completing their teams as they had poor first half drafts. The Minnesota Vikings have definitely raised the most eyebrows. With the #12 Overall pick the Vikings drafted Florida State Quarterback, Christian Ponder. Some experts had him going in the 4th Round. An ACC QB, I’m not sure what the Vikings were thinking about with that pick. Some were surprised that Andy Dalton wasn’t selected in the 1st Round. Cincy took him early in Round 2 with the 34th pick overall. I just don’t get why teams continue to roll the dice on unproven quarterbacks with a first round draft pick. It’s proven that over 50% of these guys end up being busts. I think we’ve got 3 1st Round busts on our hands this year: Cam Newton, Jake Locker, and Christian Ponder. I don’t see any of these guys amounting to much. Blaine Gabbert could be a factor at Jacksonville, you never know what to expect out of David Gerrard. The one who has the best chance at playing next year is probably TCU’s Andy Dalton for the Bengals. Especially with all the Carson Palmer drama.

The SEC dominated the draft, sending 5 of the first 6 guys to the League. The Big XII came in 2nd, with the #2 Overall in Von Miller and QB Blaine Gabbert going 10th. We’ve seen elite talent fly off the board in the first three rounds. Elite players fell while others were selected too high, it’s always the same story at the NFL Draft.
