Michael Vick's injury and the future of the Eagles.

By: Just Bet     Date: Sep 29, 2011
Print Article

When Michael Vick broke open last year for the Philadelphia Eagles, we saw the transgression from a running QB to a true QB. It was inspiring, like watching your little troubled boy growing up and becoming a responsible man. After a very popular career in Atlanta and of course, the criminal history, he fought back and became the starting QB for the Eagles in 2010, putting up awesome numbers, throwing at a 63 completion pct, with 3018 yds, 21 TD passes and only tossing 6 picks. And the liberated legs of Vick still managed to get him 676 yards rushing and 9 rushing TDs as well. What he did in 2010 was absolutely tremendous. Leading the team to the playoffs with a 10-6 record, eventually losing to the Super Bowl champion Packers, 21-16, where Vick played very well.

This was facilitated by the ridiculous defeat of the New York Giants 38-31 with the DeSean Jackson 65 yard punt return to end the game, which we all watched with our mouths agape.

Coming up are the New York Giants, and I am more than sure they still have the harsh aftertaste of that loss in their mouths. But if Vick is playing, how much does it affect the game?

Vick has a small frame, only 6-0 and a lean 210 lbs. The southpaw has only started 16 games in a season once in his 9 year career. When he got hurt against the Falcons in yet another freak play of the season, he had his bell rung and was put out for the game, when his neck snapped back after going face first into his own OL, Todd Herremans. Vick suffered the big “C-word”, concussion, the word no player wants to hear, especially in this day and age of football.

His play this season has been solid, and the Eagles have been decent as well, but if he can’t play, who will take the place of “Mr. Everything”? Without Vick the team loses a massive bond to their offense, obviously. After Vick left, the Eagles couldn’t hold on to their lead and ended up losing to the Falcons 35-31.

Word is that Vicks outlook does look promising and he likely will play on Sunday. Is it necessarily the best choice for the team though? Vick at 100% is visibly better than Vick at 80%, of course. And do you take the chance of the Giants blasting him and putting him out for 3-4 weeks with a serious hit and injury? It’s a divisional game which is always vital. It’s a tough question and alot weighs on the shoulder of head Coach Andy Reid this week to make the decision.

The Eagles have the weapons on offense, even though a little banged up as well, with DeSean Jackson with wrist problems and LeSean McCoy with his hand issues as well. But if Vick doesn’t start, who gets the nod? Hamstringed Vince Young, the 2 time pro-bowler from Tennessee? Or 24 year old Mike Kafka?

Kafka was good when he replaced Vick against the Falcons, going 7-9 for 72 yards, and he would be going against a beat down secondary in the Giants. But they still have a strong front 4, led by Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul, so pressure is pretty likely, where Philly’s O-line has been questionable.

One thing about Philly is they do work their roster well, and seemingly have been great with QBs as of late especially. Kolb’s early success in Arizona shows he was groomed and ready, maybe Kafka can be another up and comer as a solid backup or trade bait in years to come.

If Vick passes the tests he will have to go through, I am sure they will play him. For Philly fans, I hope it would be the right decision from Andy Reid. Written by Victor Chandler for www.VegasTopDogs.com
