MLB Betting: Three Pitchers Overachieving Early in the Year

When betting on baseball, you have to remember it is a really long grind. The season is about six months long. This often means there can be some guys that look like superstars in April that end up being good fade material down the road. Some of the teams at the top of the standings right now won't be even close to the top at the end of the year. I wanted to look at three pitchers who are vastly overachieving right now. These are guys I'd either want to fade or at least avoid in the coming weeks and months.

1. Nick Martinez- Texas- Yes, I know that he leads the majors with the lowest ERA. It isn't going to continue. Martinez was not a highly touted prospect through the minors, and he was no better than average last year. I think Martinez has probably improved a bit this year, but if you are looking for a good candidate to sell high on this is your guy. That 0.84 ERA won't be around for long. The Texas Rangers aren't a good team either, so it's unlikely he'll continue to pick up wins like he has so far.

2. Mike Pelfrey- Do I really have to tell you that this guy has a long history of being a subpar pitcher in the majors? If you've followed baseball in the last few years, you should know this. Pelfrey is pitching way above his head right now. He is stranding 83.3% of runners on base, which isn't a sustainable level. Pelfrey is going to get rocked sooner or later, and fading him in the coming weeks should make you money.

3. Brandon Morrow- Morrow is better than the two guys listed above him on this list. He may end up having a nice season for San Diego, but he is definitely overachieving in the early going. The Padres have some serious defensive problems in the outfield, and sooner or later that is going to hurt a guy like Morrow. If the oddsmakers start getting too high on Morrow, look for chances to go against him.
