Knicks secure first winning season since 2013

Now here’s something some people thought they would never see again… the New York Knicks will finish the NBA’s 2020-2021 season with a winning record! The last time we saw this happen, it was nearly a decade ago, back in 2013, when Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith led the team to be the second best in the Eastern Conference.

That was the last time the Knicks finished a season over .500, but ever since, in the next seven seasons, the team’s record has been 184-374, and they haven’t made it to the playoffs even once. Not when Phil Jackson took over as team’s general manager, not when Porzingis came in the picture, the Knicks have just not been able to cut a break ever since, but now, finally, after almost 8 long years, they will finish the regular season with a winning record, and they are also in great place to make it to the postseason, standing in the fourth spot in the East right now, just behind the Milwaukee Bucks, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Philadelphia 76ers, and well on top of teams like the Miami Heat, defending East champion, and the Boston Celtics as well, who sit in the 7th spot in the conference.

Coming right out of the weekend, we can say that the Knicks won their last 3 games in a row, 9 of their last 10, and 12 of their last 13. Impressive numbers for a team that nobody would bet on just a few weeks ago, but that now is making a real splash in the league and will be certainly fighting to get to the NBA Finals in July.

Which Knicks players are responsible for the team’s recent success?

There is one player that takes most of the credits this year for the Knicks, even though it’s always a team effort. But Julius Randle has definitely been playing at a superstar level, and is leading the team in points, rebounds, and assists. Randle is averaging 24.2 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game, after playing and starting in 64 of the 65 games played so far by the Knicks this season.

R.J. Barrett has been of great help as well, starting in 65 games, and averaging 17.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Another big help for the team has come off the bench, and in the form of NBA’s veteran and former league MVP, Derrick Rose. Rose came to the Knicks in mid-season, coming from the Detroit Pistons, he has played 29 games for the Knicks so far, and has started in only 3 of them, and he averages 14.3 points per game, along with 2.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game, shooting 47% from the field. On the defensive end, Mitchell Robinson has been playing a big part for the team so far this season, averaging 8.1 rebounds, but contributing with 1.1 steals and 1.5 blocks per game as well.

Do you think the Knicks have what it takes to go to the playoffs and fight, head-to-head, with the Nets, the 76ers or the Milwaukee Bucks? How far do you think they will go?
