Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks | August 17 | Race 8 | 5:30 PM PT
#1 Iscreamuscream (8/5), trained by Phil D’Amato & ridden by Hector Berrios
Iscreamuscream boasts an impressive unbeaten record, having won all three of her career starts, earning $189,600. Hector Berrios has been on board for all three wins. On July 20th, she won the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar as the even-money favorite. During the race, she set the pace over a one-mile turf course, demonstrating her ability to perform well at Del Mar. During this meet, horses have difficulty winning from behind on said turf course. With a clean break, I expect her to be on the lead with #2 Circle of Trust a close second. There isn't a lot of early speed, as most horses have a "sustained" running style.
Iscreamuscream is trained by Philip D'Amato, a well-respected trainer in California known for preparing horses for success in major races. His expertise could be a significant advantage in ensuring Iscreamuscream is in peak condition for the race. D'Amato is known for his turf prowess, evident in his winning 18% while hitting the board 45% in all turf routes over the past five years. Also, Hector Berrios has performed terrific on the turf, winning 16% while finishing in the money 48% in all turf routes over the past year.
Iscreamuscream's victory in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap has proven her ability to handle the Del Mar turf. Starting from post position #1 will benefit her early speed profile. The step up in distance from one mile to 1 1/8 miles will be a new challenge, but her previous performances suggest she has the stamina to manage this increase. She owns the second fastest early, middle, and late-pace speed figures in the field. Twirling Candy’s progeny win 17% and finish in the money 40% in all turf routes over the past five years.
