Is this the demise of the Sacramento Kings?

The latest NBA news pulsating around the basketball world is the buzz that the Sacramento Kings could be sold and moved to Seattle. And of course, it’s always hard to see a team leave a city especially when the fans really want a basketball team.

Problem is, at the end of the day it is all about the money and as a business resolution. The Kings have had awful attendance only grabbing approximately 13k fans a night, ranking them dead last in the NBA.

This is also coming from a fan base that was also identified as being some of the strongest and raucous fan base in the NBA. Granted, they have struggled for countless years, but fans still stayed by their side, in particular, during the duration of 99-04, the Kings were at their climax, when they were winning 50+ games a season, led by Chris Webber, Mike Bibby, and Peja Stojakovic. Although Sacramento does have a very faithful fan base, in the end it still comes down to it plainly being Sacramento, and the small market, that isn’t Seattle.

Sacramento doesn’t have a whole bunch to cheer about, and they certainly haven’t in about 7 years with the Kings plodding along, with a typical wins record of around 25 games/season, maybe it is time to bring things back to Seattle. Kings fans should feel badly about the whole thing, but the arena was dried up and they weren’t showing the appeal that an NBA team needs anymore. Teams get shuffled around like a deck of cards in this day and age. If a team isn’t making money for the league, then it starts to lower its head on the chopping block.

Seattle is an area that needs to have a basketball team, above all because of the market base it has. Seattle has been waiting for this day for years, ever since Oklahoma City Thunder took them away. The Sonics were forced and had no choice but to depart from Seattle. Unfortunately, the fans paid the price for it. In the early 90’s in particular, the Sonics were fundamental to the NBA, led by Dale Ellis dropping 3 pt bombs, the X man, after that, Shawn Kemp, and Gary Payton, they were a special team that was always enjoyable to watch, and was regularly energetic. Playing in the NBA finals in 1996, it was great stuff to watch.

Some might argue the point of Seattle getting a further probability at having a team, when there are many additional cities that would love to have an NBA team for the 1st time. Even some bigger market places like Kentucky, Las Vegas (which would be a great spot in my opinion), or even Tennessee, could be great spots for an NBA team to land, but, Seattle, also has a lot of great things going on for the fans, with their football on the presuming rise, and a strong faithful baseball team.

It will undeniably be a depressing day for Sacramento’s fans if this really does in fact occur. But it would be a great day at the same time for Seattle fans.
