You'd have to go back to 1997 to find a season where the University of Texas lost 3 games in Austin. 1997 just so happened to be John Mackovik's last year as the UT Head Football Coach. They might lose 5 this year. The Longhorns still host Oklahoma State and their Thanksgiving Day in-state rival, Texas A&M. There's no question that Mack Brown has unbelievable recruiting capabilities, UT has had a Top 5 Recruiting Class 4 of the last 5 years. But how can you possibly recruit a Top 5 class 4 of the last 5 years and be as BAD as you are this year?! Something just doesn't add up. Mack is in the Motherland of High School Football, my mother could pull a Top 25 recruiting class to Austin. It doesn't matter who the Head Football Coach is, you WILL attract talent to the University of Texas. Boise State could tie UT in BCS National Championship Titles by the end of this year. Take Texas Tech for example, averaging 30th Nationally in Recruiting classes. Every year that game is a competitive game with Tech winning 25% of the time. UT's talent level is so much higher than that of Texas Techs yet that game is always close. Mack Brown is a better recruiter than Mike Leach, but Mike Leach gets more out of his players than Mack Brown does. The question becomes: What do you do WITH the talent? Mack came to UT in 1998 from North Carolina with UT off of a 4-7 season and begging for change. Well, change they got. They went undefeated and won the inaugural Big XII season. Better sign a contract to keep him here until 2014, which UT did in fact do. Now, UT AD and Alumni alike are scratching their heads and wondering if this is "the Guy". That being said, take all the Top Recruiting Classes you want, they have ONE National Championship in his 12 year tenure. And that one came from one of the most talented College QBs in the history of College Football, Vince Young. Where do the Longhorns go from here? Some are calling for the firing of Mack and the hiring of Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp. A little too much of a knee-jerk reaction, I know. But, the new rumor is that the Georgia job will be opening at the end of the season and Muschamp will bail for that. This has UT going into PANIC mode and not wanting to lose their beloved "Head Coach in Waiting". It may sound like I'm being a little unfair towards a coach that most programs would kill to have. But for the amount of talent that goes through that program, the bar has to be higher. They are off of back to back home losses to Baylor and Iowa State, you kiddin' me. Iowa State has never broke the Top 50 in recruiting classes while Baylor has cracked the Top 50 once. Absolutely no excuses. LSU, who's 6 hours down the road, has 2 Titles from different coaches and never the recruiting classes of Texas. What other College Football Program could you name that has gotten a Top 5 Recruiting Class 4 of the last 5 years and might not make a Bowl Game? Unheard of. I know it's just ONE bad year, but they're not even position to be having a down year. If UT drops their 4th at home and doesn't make a Bowl Game look for something drastic to happen in Austin.
