Head Coaching Moves in the SEC

By: Michael Black     Date: Dec 14, 2012
Print Article

There's been a lot of coaching moves in College Football over the past two weeks, let's take a look at some major moves. When the year started who would've guessed that the conference with the most fired coaches would be in the SEC. Arkansas has now hired their second coach in 8 months. After Bobby Petrino went Evil Knievel he was replaced by John L Smith, that didn't last too long and now the Hogs hire Wisconsin's Bret Bielema. Bobby Petrino was just hired by Western Kentucky and he could do big things with a talented Hilltopper team. Gene Chizik was always a questionable hire for Auburn to start with. He's now out and they go with a just as questionable hire, Gus Malzahn from Arkansas State. Just odd that the last two Auburn coaches have been from Iowa State and Arkansas State. Butch Jones comes into a Tennessee job that has looked impossible to fill in the SEC East. Dooley did a pretty good job this last year, losing at Georgia by 7 and blowing a 3rd quarter lead at home to the Gators. I thought Dooley deserved another year but he's out. With the recent success of South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia I don't see the Vols returning to the level that old coach Phillip Fulmer had the program at. Lastly there's Kentucky, Joker Phillips didn't have the last laugh with the Wildcats and Mark Stoops steps in to bring some life to a program that appeared to be on the rise just a few years ago. In an ADD driven day and age who knows how long any of these guys will be with their new jobs. The Hogs had the best hire in Bret Bielema and should have the best chance to make some noise next year. The big rumor right now is that Nick Saban could be heading back to the NFL and be the next Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns. If he does bail on Bama they'll really be in a tight spot since a lot of big name coaches are already off the market. Should be interesting to see how things unfold next year in the SEC.
