With all respect to the Atlanta Braves, which I feel are a very good team, but in my opinion, they are far from immortal. Granted, they sit in second place in the NL East, 6.0-games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. But over the last 10 games, they have split out, 5-5, which does include a 1-2 mark in this series against the Washington Nationals. As a matter of fact, going back to last season, Washington has taken five of the last eight matchups in this Division rivalry. It's true, both at the plate and on the mound, the Braves hold better statistics. But I said it before and I will say it again, baseball isn't played on paper. It's a situational sport. And today's situation, I feel favors the visitor. The Nationals, which sit in third place in the NL East, 12.5-games back, can shorten the gap between them and the second place, Braves here. They've already taken two of three in this series, and today's pitching matchup favors Washington. Trevor Williams and Reynaldo Lopez are scheduled. The National right-hander is 4-0 overall with a 2.29 ERA on the campaign. His numbers as a guest are just as impressive, as he is 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA away from home this season. As a matter fact, the team has won eight of his 10 starts as he has not allowed more than three earned runs in any outing this season. The Braves right-hander also owns some very respectable numbers. He is 2-2 with the 1.75 ERA overall in 2024. And at home, he is 1-0 with a 1.21 ERA. But an inconsistent lineup by Atlanta has failed to give him proper run support, and with the way Williams is pitching, I see him containing the Atlanta offense, while the surging Washington lineup takes care of the rest.
