The American League East is without question, the most competitive division in all of baseball. Today we see Game 1 of the series between two teams finishing the season in opposite directions. The Tampa Bay Rays sit in second place, just 2.5 games back of the Baltimore Orioles, at 95-62. The Boston Red Sox dwell in the division cellar, 21.0 games back, at 76-80. With just a handful of games left in the regular season, the Rays still have a shot at first place in the East. We all know the advantages to finishing as a division leader. Trust me when I tell you they want to finish the regular season in first place. On the other hand, motivating the Red Sox, is not finishing in last place. They are 3.0 games back of the Yankees. They don’t want to finish in the cellar, my friends. To say Tampa Bay has dominated Boston would be an understatement. They have taken nine of the 11 meetings this season against their division rival, with six of the last 10 going over the total. These are two of the most explosive lineups in baseball as Tampa Bay averages over 5.24 runs per game, while Boston accounts for 4.83 runs per game. Coming into this series opener, the Rays have played to five consecutive overs, while the Red Sox bats have dwindled a bit. Today’s pitching matchups are scheduled to be Zach Eflin and Tanner Houck. The Tampa Bay right-hander is 15-8 with a 3.44 ERA on the campaign. On the road in 2023, he is 4-4 with a 3.65 ERA. However, when facing the Red Sox in his career, he has been shellacked, possessing a whopping ERA of 6.43. The Boston right-hander is 5-9 with a 4.92 ERA this season. At home in 2023, he is just 3-4 with an area 5.08. And in his career, in two starts against today’s opponent, he is 0-2 also with a whopping ERA of 6.30. With these two starting pitchers and the prior mention motivation for both, I feel the over is a solid play.
