Thursday's Free play: Northwestern Wildcats.
Northwest has been playing some very good basketball. Not only are they winning, they are covering the number, as well. The Wildcats have covered four in a row and seven of their last 10 overall outings. The last two days, they bested the Nittany Lions by 10-points, and then yesterday they took down the Hoosiers, a game in which they were nearly about a 7.0-point underdog, 74-61. Are they due for a letdown? Are they stepping up in class significantly? For the first question, I would say I don't know for sure. For the second, it is certain that they are stepping up in class. The Boilermakers are a darn good basketball team. Granted, they are not the team they were over recent seasons, and they have failed to cover four straight, while losing three of their last four. However, three of those matchups were against Michigan State at home, Ohio State on the road, and Wisconsin at home. Yes, the last meeting between these two teams took place just eight days ago as Northwestern lost a heartbreaker, 70-66. Laying double-digits is never an easy thing especially this time of year. It's true, the Wildcats don't have the most explosive offense, despite having one of the best players in the conference in Nick Martinelli. But the Boilermakers squad consists of three double-digit scorers, one player just under DD's, a few others flirting with it. They outscore opponents by an average of 11.6 PPG and are very good on the defensive boards. They are considerably better on the offensive boards in this matchup, too. And let's not forget they are one of the best in the nation from downtown. If this line would've been a little higher, I would've come in with the underdog just to side with a team that's been money covering for us bettors. I do feel it will be a bit closer than the pointspread. But I am not so sure that I would put them on as a premium play. I still like it. Take Northwestern. Thank you.
