The New York Mets are in a dogfight with the Philadelphia Phillies for the top-spot in the National League East. Currently, the Mets (48-34) have a slim lead of just a half-game over their division rival. With just a few weeks before the All-Star Break, New York needs victories. After dropping seven of their last eight, the Mets have won their last two games. They face a Pittsburgh Pirates opponent here that possesses the second-worst record in the NL, at 32-50, putting them in last place in the Central division. They come into today's contest dropping two in a row, and seven of the last 10 outings. This is an ideal situation for the Mets, as they have dominated the Pirates, taking seven of the last 10 meetings going back to April of last season. I feel the pitching matchup heavily favors the visitor here. David Peterson gets the nod for New York. The left-hander is 5-3, with a 2.98 ERA on the campaign as the team has won nine of his 15 starts this season. Only once in those 15 starts has he allowed more than three earned runs. He has been very consistent all season long. For Pittsburgh, Mitch Keller takes the hill. The right-hander is a dismal, 1-10 this season, with an ERA of 4.02. To be honest with you, he hasn't pitched too badly. But at times, he has gotten shelled. He is either on or off, so to speak. He just gets absolutely no run support at all. In seven of Pittsburgh's last 10 outings, they have scored three or less runs. Their lineup just can't score. Meanwhile, their pitching staff, has gotten plowed recently. Take the Mets. Thank you.
