Very quietly, the Minnesota Twins have taken control of the American League Central. They are the only team in the Division possessing a winning record, at 28-26, owning a two-game cushion. After a sluggish start to the campaign, the Houston Astros have now climbed within just three-games in the American League West, at 31-22. But I think we can all agree, the Astros aren’t playing with the same intensity that we are used to seeing them play with the last several seasons. To put it very simply, they are looking mortal. These two American League rivals have met four times in 2023, with the Twins, taking three of the four meetings. This includes yesterday’s series-opener, by a score of 7-5. Ryan and Bielak are scheduled starters here. The Minnesota right-hander is 7-1 with an ERA of 2.21 on the campaign. The team has won seven of his 10 outings this season. To be quite honest, he has pitched extremely well, allowing two earned runs or less in eight of those 10 turns. No matter how you cut it, Ryan is pitching very well. He is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA his last three starts. He is also 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA on the road this season. The Astros right-hander is 1-2 with a respectable ERA of 3.55. But the team has lost three of the five games he has made an appearance in 2023. Overall, he has pitch pretty well. However, he comes off his worst outing of the campaign, yielding four earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched, mostly on three home runs. I do feel that the starting pitching is significantly stronger for Minnesota here. Let’s take the Twins. Thank you.
