Dallas Cowboys: The Rap Industry of the NFL

By: Michael Black     Date: Nov 30, 2010
Print Article

In the day and age of glitz and glamour, Dallas has it all: the QB whose relationship status is more important than his playing status, the underachieving Big Name WR in Roy Williams, their other WR, Miles Austin is on Reality TV shows starring his own girlfriend, a "3-headed monster" at running back that never sees the end zone and misses blocks all over the field. The question becomes: Are you a team that's trying to look good on the field and win or are you just a team trying to look good. And just 3 years ago Jerry Jones and Cowboy fans alike all wanted Bill Parcells OUT!!! Jerry Jones wishes he could buy a Time Machine and go back 3 years. He's just now remembering how hard it is to go 13-3 in the NFC East. Wade Phillips might have been the Coach that year, but that was Bill Parcells' team. Let's look at Wade Phillips resume. He was the Buffalo Bills Defensive Coordinator from 95-97 before he was promoted from within to become the head coach. They lose their first playoff game 2 years in a row, and his 3rd year they fail to make the Playoffs. Some might argue the Bills have still been recovering from Phillips being their Head Coach. 6 years later he's handed one of the best teams in the NFL, a team off of a Playoff appearance with an emerging star at QB. His first year they go 13-3 but can't win a Playoff game. Throughout his entire career as a head coach, 9 years, he was ONE Playoff win. He's single handedly driven 2 prominent NFL Teams into the ground. What has the man REALLY ever accomplished?

How quickly people forget "where they came from". At the end of the 2002 NFL Season the Cowboys fell victim to a 3rd straight 5-11 record. It was then that Jerry Jones talked Bill Parcells out of retirement to become the new Cowboys Head Coach. In his first year they went 10-6 and made the Playoffs. They went through their offensive struggles over the next few years, but who wouldn't when your QB was named Quincy and he's scheduling appointments in rehab for a nose candy problem instead of scheduling extra film time. They grew each year defensively and once Romo came in at QB it appeared all the Cowboys problems were solved. The 2006 season came and went and Dallas saw themselves going on the road for a Playoff Showdown at Seattle. Dallas is kicking a chip-shot FG to move into the next round, Romo gets a bad snap and gets tackled at the 1-yard line, and the Cowboys lose. Let's completely over react, Parcells has to go!!! Um, excuse me, you were just going 5-11 every year, Bill Parcells was not the Deep Snapper for the play, and you want that man gone!?!?

Offensive Coordinator Jason Garret gets the knod to finish the season, but after that, who knows what direction the Cowboys will go for a Head Coach. No owner wants to fork over big bucks with the threat of next year's lockout. The factoring matter for that decision will come down to if Jerry Jones wants to be high-fiving Running Backs on the sidelines or sit in the Owners Box and sacrifice a little fun for Wins. Look back to 1989/early 90's for Dallas. They bring in Jimmy Johnson to replace Tom Landry and they get to the Super Bowl within 4 years. Jimmy wanted to do things his way and told Jerry Jones to stay off the sideline. They go on to win back to back Super Bowls and Jerry says, Super Bowl wins are great and all, but I want to be on the Sideline with the team. He fires Jimmy Johnson and brings in Barry Switzer, gets to dance on the sidelines all year, they win the Super Bowl 1 of the next 2 years, but any TRUE fan knows that was still Jimmy Johnson's team. It was all downhill from there. Here we are over 15 years later and history is repeating itself all over again. Bill Parcels will be playing the role of Jimmy Johnson and Wade Phillips as Barry Switzer. With the Cowboys unanswered questions about their Head Coach, it doesn't sound like a very stable environment for a team that could use a father figure/leader as a Head Coach right now. Having won 2 of their last 3 games, and nearly upsetting the Saints on Thanksgiving Day, the Cowboys are like the Hollywood Starlet who just got out of Rehab. The first month is no problem, but I think it's only a matter of time before they relapse.
