Big XII Rookies Shine

By: Michael Black     Date: Jan 20, 2011
Print Article

Well, the 2010 NFL Season has almost come to an end and what a year it was for Big XII rookies. Nebraska Cornhusker Ndamukong Suh lived up to all the hype. From his Pre Season body slam on Jake Delhomme to giving Jay Cutler a concussion, this guy proved that he is a lethal defensive linemen. A boy named Suh finished with 66 tackles, 10 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception. After just one year, you can guarantee that Suh will require extra help from offenses to keep their QBs safe.

Who would have thought that the Saint Louis Rams would add a rookie QB and be a game away from winning their division. OU rookie Sam Bradford looked like Dan Marino at times this year. He displayed poise and confidence from game 1. Bradford set a rookie record with 55 pass attempts in his first career game. Bradford finished the season with 18 TDs and threw for over 250 yards in 5 games. Very impressive for a guy who started all 16 games as a rookie. Like I said, they were a win away from winning their division with a rookie QB. I know their division isn’t exactly the NFC East, but it’s still impressive. The Big XII connection of Bradford to Amendola, OU to Texas Tech, showed what’s to come over the years, baring a striking resemblance of Brady to Welker.

That brings us the Wild Card of the group, and even I was blown away by the success of Colt McCoy in Cleveland this year. McCoy literally had to go from the frying pan to the fire, making his first start against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He kept the Browns in the game, they were down 21-10 late in the 4th, but lost 28-10. For the kid’s first game, he looked good. He goes on to lead the Browns to victory in his next 2 starts at New Orleans and (what I consider the biggest upset in the NFL this year) at home over the New England Patriots. The Longhorn proved he can scramble too. He averaged 5 yards a carry, putting up 136 yards this year. All in all, the Big XII rookies proved that they were worthy of their Top 5 Billing. Bradford went 1st overall and Suh went 2nd. I don’t expect to be saying the same thing in a year. There’s a few guys that show some promise though: A&M’s Butkus Award Winner,LB Von Miller, Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert, and Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara.
