The “NFL Specialist” Joe Duffy shares his pro gamblers clipboard on the Sunday Night Football game between the Bills and Colts. These are sharp player news and notes compiled from around the internet. It’s the type of intel he has for every bettable game.
Bills-Colts
Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel will start Sunday’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Kevin Kolb, Manuel’s competitor for Buffalo’s starting quarterback job, will serve as an emergency QB as he makes his way back from a left knee injury.
Kolb returned to practice on Friday, but was limited and did not take part in any team drills after missing time due to a death in the family. With Kolb unlikely to play, undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel will serve as Manuel’s backup against the Colts.
Cornerback Leodis McKelvin (groin) and wide receiver Brad Smith (undisclosed) will not play. McKelvin, who had groin surgery in the offseason, has been dealing with soreness since the team’s night practice on Monday. Marrone said that McKelvin met with Buffalo’s doctors Friday night for further evaluation.
The status of defensive end Mario Williams (sore foot) will be determined in warmups prior to Sunday’s game, Marrone said.

The Colts no longer want to be known as a pass-oriented team on offense. They want to balance things by running the ball more. The Colts finished in the bottom third of the league in yards per carry last season at 3.8 yards. Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said they don’t have a percentage on how much they want to run the ball. They want to let the flow of the game dictate things. You won’t get a real feel for what type of rushing attack the Colts have because Ahmad Bradshaw, whom they signed during the offseason, is still recovering from foot surgery. Vick Ballard, who rushed for 814 yards as a rookie last season, will start, with former first-round pick Donald Brown backing him up.
The Colts are set at the top three receiver spots with Reggie Wayne, Darrius Heyward-Bey and T.Y. Hilton. Things get interesting after that. LaVon Brazill is the fourth receiver, but he’s suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s drug policy. Griff Whalen has been the training camp darling so far, catching almost every pass thrown his way. He can solidify his spot as the fourth receiver during Brazill’s absence with strong playing during the preseason.

The Indianapolis Colts will be without tight end Dwayne Allen and linebacker Jerrell Freeman for their preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, coach Chuck Pagano said Friday.
Allen is getting a second opinion on his injured foot and Freeman is dealing with a shoulder problem.
Allen and Freeman aren’t the only Colts dealing with injuries that will keep them out Sunday.
•
Pagano also ruled out offensive linemen Hugh Thornton (ankle) and Khaled Holmes (ankle) against the Bills.
•
Rookie Bjoern Werner was held out of practice Friday with a sore knee, but he’s expected to play against Buffalo.
•
The Colts are holding out hope safety LaRon Landry (knee) will be able to play Sunday.
•
Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey continues to increase his practice load after being slowed by a sprained knee earlier this week.

Wide receiver Stevie Johnson injured a hamstring in practice last week. Johnson, arguably Buffalo’s best player, may see little to no action against the Colts on Sunday. That injury will open up a lot of possibilities for other receivers on the team, as Buffalo has not had much help from any receivers other than Johnson in recent seasons.
