Each day these articles will prepare readers for the start of both the NFL and college football seasons. It is important to learn from mistakes in previous years and develop a game plan for success heading into this year. Let’s go over some strategies and/or information that will lead to a profitable football season.
Today’s article is going to be applicable to both the NFL and college football. One of my favorite things to rely on in handicapping is that history repeats itself. That theory holds true with coaches and how their teams perform. Certain coaches have very specific trends in regards to when their teams play good and bad. For example, Tom Coughlin’s teams have been historic for playing well at the start of the season then fading down the stretch as players get tired of his grinding and somewhat abrasive attitude. Meanwhile, other coaches have a tendency for their teams to start off poorly then come on as the season ends. Before making selections on early season games involving established coaches, it is a must to look for any early season trends with their teams.
Another coaching theory to focus on is looking at how long a coach has been with a program. Coaches who are in their first and second years tend to be much more motivated and bring energy to a team, unlike coaches who have been there for several years. Two perfect examples of these theory are Jimbo Fisher of Florida State and Ralph Friedgen, formerly the head coach of Maryland. Fisher has added new energy to the Seminoles and is also a good coach, who revamped a Florida State program that became stagnant under Bobby Bowden. Conversely, Friedgen, who enjoyed initial success at Maryland, could not continue his success as his message and motivation faded throughout the years. Look to back good head coaches who are relatively fresh in their respective programs and look to fade coaches who have stagnant programs in a long tenure. This theory also applies to NFL coaches just as well. Coaches like Steve Spagnuolo and Mike Smith brought a fresh energy and success to teams that were really struggling before they arrived. Use these coaching theories in both NFL and college football handicapping.
