We are roughly 5 games into the 2010 NFL season. And, of course some teams are shocking us along the way, some in a good way and some in a not so good way.
Every season, there are surprises along the way, and in this day and age, most of the time, coaches are expected to win sooner than later. Personally, I often think teams bump their coaches a bit too quick at times. But, let’s take a look at some of the teams that are struggling at this point of the season and may be looking at possible adjustment behind the bench during the season.
Wade Phillips, Dallas Cowboys. Head coach; 2007-present (34-18 record). Wades talented team consistently puts up big yards every season he has been there, but it seems they just can’t get over that almighty hump that keeps them from getting to the promised land. Jerry Jones has no qualms about making moves. Seems Wade’s job is at risk every time the Boys lose a few games they shouldn’t have. This year’s terribly slow start may mean the beginning of the end. Four of their next five opponents are tough matchups, two in their division vs the Giants, and two on the road at Green Bay and at Minnesota. Can the Boys get their swagger back before it’s too late?
Brad Childress, Minnesota Vikings. Head coach; 2006-present (37-31 record).Chile has made some brilliant moves off the field and has gotten some great talent in his tenure in Minny. Sidney Rice and AP in 2007, making the big push for pro bowl, defensive end Jared Allen, of course his ongoing pursuit for Brett Favre, and now Randy Moss. Minnesota, who has always been a mediocre team, has had a few years with some moderate success, but if this falls apart up North, questions will start to arise about Brad and perhaps his skills with the headset.
Mike Singletary, San Francisco 49ers. Head coach; 2008-present (13-17 record). The biggest dilemma with this, is that the Niners have been a below .500 team for 8 of the last 12 years (72-109 in that time period). Singletary brought optimism back to a once regal franchise that was winning Super Bowls and was in the limelight with hall of fame players on the roster. When Singletary took over for Mike Nolan during the 2008 season, he came in with fire. They were making all the right moves in the right direction since, and appeared to be ready to be part of the upper echelon of the NFL this season. What happened?
Marv Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals. Head coach; 2003-present (58-58 record). With only 2 winning season in his tenure in Cincinnati, this may be the breaking point for Marv this season. Acquiring Terrell Owens to add to his passing game was supposed to be the big move to help put the passing game back on track and get the team to the next level. While their aerial game has improved, the team is taking steps backwards.
John Fox, Carolina Panthers. Head coach; 2002-present (71-62 record). Not that too much was expected from the Panthers this year, but they may possibly have become the worst team in the NFL in 2010. Just 2 years ago they won 12 games; it seems so long ago now in Carolina. They have gone all in with rookie QB Jimmy Clausen to take the team now, after benching Matt Moore. This will clearly be a transition period, he is not adapting as quickly as some would have anticipated or maybe thought. Clausen is only completing 47 pct of his passes with 1 TD and 3 ints. I don’t imagine Fox will be back in 2011.
