Below we will break down in detail two starting pitchers that have been on fire as well as one cold pitcher. We will also highlight the other pitchers worth mentioning on the current day. We are currently riding a hot streak where we have gone 24-11 on MLB POD's with the Braves pending on Tuesday night.
Below you will see that I have broken down tomorrow's top pitchers with ERA's under 3.00 in their last five starts and the cold starters who have ERA's over 5.00 in their last 5 starts.
Hot Starters:
Josh Johnson (3-1, 34 IP, 0.53 ERA, 0.97 WHIP)
Josh Johnson has been brilliant this year with a 2.10 ERA and even better over his last 5 starts that have seen him go 3-1 with an ERA well under 1. Johnson will face the Phillies again who started to hit last night for the first time in a while. However, Johnson has been brilliant against the Phillies including 4 starts in Philly with a 2.67 ERA. He had some bad luck the last time he faced the Phillies as Roy Halladay tossed a perfect game.
Unfortunately for Johnson he'll have to go up against Halladay again who continues to just pitch deep into games and give his team a chance to win. Halladay has been great vs. the Marlins going 17 IP this year giving up 8 hits and 2 ER including his perfect game in his last start vs. the fish. Look for the Marlins to express a little revenge being aggressive early in the count. That might not be such a good idea vs. a veteran such as Halladay.
Phillies before last nights game had been averaging just 2.63 runs per 9 over their last 10 games while the Marlins came in at 4.08 so you could argue the Marlins have been playing better baseball. Marlins are an incredible 41-18 in Johnsons' L59 overall game starts including 15-5 in his last 20 as an under dog so there is some value with him as a +150 under dog on Wednesday.
Johan Santana (1-0, 36.2 IP, 0.74 ERA, 1.04 WHIP)
You take away the bad start in Philly where Santana gave up 10 ER and he's right in this Cy Young discussion. Santana has just one win over his last 5 starts despite pitching some his best baseball as a New York Met. Being at home might be just what he needs as he is 4-1 in six game starts for the Mets with a 2.79 ERA.
Santana has four game starts with the Mets vs. the Padres and has been great in each one of them going 28 IP with four quality starts and a 1.29 ERA. The Mets have been a tough team to play at home and the value is there as he goes up against Latos who is not the same pitcher on the road as he is at home. Padres have only a .205 average on the road vs. LHP with just 3.13 runs per 9. San Diego overall vs. a starter with a WHIP under 1.15 such as Santana are only 19-42 in their last 61 games.
Honorable Mention L5 Starts
Roy Halladay (2-2, 37 IP, 2.92 ERA, 1.16 WHIP)
Adam Wainwright (3-2, 36 IP, 2.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP)
Clayton Kershaw (3-1, 32 IP, 1.97 ERA, 1.19 WHIP)
Matt Latos (3-1, 32 IP, 32 IP, 2.25 ERA, 0.91 WHIP)
Shaun Marcum (4-1, 33.1 IP, 2.16 ERA, 1.05 WHIP)
David Price (4-1, 32.1 IP, 2.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP)
Cold Starters:
C.C. Sabathia (1-2, 31 IP, 5.81 ERA, 1.32 WHIP)
Sabathia is not your traditional cold starter, but he has been having a down year with an ERA over 4 this year thus far. The problems have come for him on the road where he has 5.08 ERA. Nonetheless the Yankees continue to win his games because of their offense and his ability to go deep into games. CC is an incredible 9-1 in his last 10 starts vs. the Orioles 7-1 with the Yankees. In those 10 starts he's got a 2.59 ERA.
Sabathia will go up against Tillman making just his 2nd start of the young season. He'll have his hands full against the Yankees who are 37-14 in their last 51 meetings. The value might be there on the run line if we look deeper into this match up as the Orioles have been playing poorly going just 16-48 in their last 64 as an under dog and 12-49 in their last 61 as a dog of +201 or greater. Just how many of those 49 losses were by more than one run?
Ice Cold:
Justin Masterson (01-2 IP, 26.2 IP, 5.74 ERA, 1.95 WHIP)
CJ Wilson (1-2, 28 IP, 6.75 ERA, 1.46 WHIP)
Kyle Davies (26 IP 5.54 ERA, 1.50 WHIP)
