With Sunday’s blowout loss to Pac-10 and Los Angeles rival Southern Cal, the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team fell to 7-10 on the season. The LA Times quoted UCLA head coach Ben Howland as saying “they completely dominated us from the beginning” in reference to Sunday’s defeat.
UCLA has one of the richest college basketball traditions of any school in college basketball history, but this year’s UCLA team is in danger of becoming just the fourth squad to finish a season with fewer wins than losses in more than 60 seasons. If the Bruins can’t get things turned around, Howland will become the first UCLA head man to finish below the .500 mark twice since it happened to Wilbur Johnson in the 1940s. To put this in further perspective, a losing season this year would be just the third since the season before the legendary John Wooden took over.
The Bruins have won four of their last seven games, and highly regarded recruit Josh Smith is back to 100 percent, so maybe they can find a way to squeak out a winning campaign. But the Bruins will have to win nine of their final 13 games to do so.
UCLA will take the floor next against Washington at home Thursday.
