Tuesday 5/25/2010 Hot and Cold Starters

By:     Date: May 24, 2010
Print Article

Below we will break down in detail two starting pitchers that have been on fire as well as one cold pitcher. We will also highlight the other pitchers worth mentioning on the current day. With our 15-3 overall MLB run on the line with the Angels pending tonight we look to Tuesday's hot and cold starters. We have a lot of pitchers with ERA's under 3.00 in their last 5 going on Tuesday (10), but just 1 pitcher going with an ERA over 6.00 in Randy Wolf in his last 5 starts. Hot Starters: John Lester (4-0, 38 IP, 1.89 ERA, 0.79 whip, 42 K's) You just can't argue with those stats over a pitchers last 5 starts as the Red Sox and Lester start to heat up. However, not so fast as they face off against the best team in baseball in the Rays who have their own hot starter in James Shields going on Tuesday. Shields and the Rays are 22-9 in his last 31 home starts vs. a team with a winning record and are tough to beat. Shields has a career 3.04 ERA at home vs. the Red Sox. Lester on the other hand has struggled vs. the Rays, but oddly enough despite the Red Sox 1-8 record in his last 9 starts on turf has a 2.84 ERA in 3 career starts at Tampa. However, I think his hot streak is about to end coming off a complete game against the Twins he's due for a bad start here or at least one where the Rays get a few runs. In Lester's last 6 starts vs. the Rays he has a 5.86 ERA with 3 of the 6 being poor outings including this year when he went 6 IP and gave up 7 ER. Lester will go up against the hot hitting Rays and Carlos Pena who has 5 career home runs against the south paw. The Rays are hitting .338 scoring 7.85 runs per 9 in their last 5 vs. LHP. They are 20-8 in their last 28 starts vs. a LH starter while the Red Sox are 9-23 in their last 32 as an under dog, and 14-30 in their last 44 playing on field turf. The Red Sox may have one 6-1 on Monday night, but they are just 7-17 in their last 24 trips to Tampa. Justin Verlander (4-1, 35.2 IP, 1.26 ERA, 0.87 WHIP) Verlander is what I consider a streaky pitcher particularly on the road where he posts a 4.22 ERA this year, but a 3-1 record. Verlander will face off against the Mariners who have really struggled this season to hit the ball leading to limited wins. The Mariners are just 7-21 in their last 28 games overall and have a .229 average while scoring just 2.60 runs per 9 in their last 10 games vs. RHP. Now they'll have to face one of the best in the game. Verlander off a complete game in his last start on the road in which we had him at -118 got an easy win. Tuesday he'll be in a similar situation as a favorite -110 to -150. The Tigers are 45-19 in Verlanders last 64 starts vs. a team with a losing record. He seems to really turn it up against a team that really has no match for his pitches. Seattle in their careers have a .272 average in 162 AB vs. Verlander so they have enjoyed some success as Verlander is 6-4 in his last 10 outings. He'll face a solid pitcher in Fister who is 2-1 with a 1.66 ERA at home this year so don't just pencil in the Tigers. Honorable Mention L5 Starts Chris Leake (3-0, 32 IP, 2.25 ERA, 0.94 WHIP) Anibal Sanchez (2-1, 30.2 IP, 2.35 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) Ian Kennedy (3-1, 36 IP, 2.50 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) John Garland (4-0, 31 IP, 2.03 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) Livan Hernandez (2-1, 31.2 IP, 2.27 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) James Shields (3-1, 36.1 IP, 2.48 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 45 K's) Ervin Santana (2-1, 33.1 IP, 2.97 ERA, 1.50 WHIP) Doug Fister (1-1, 36 IP, 2.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) Cold Starters: Randy Wolf (1-3, 6.23 ERA, 1.81 WHIP, 30.1 IP)
