Thursday's Probable Starters Worth Noting

By:     Date: May 19, 2010
Print Article

Below we will break down in detail two starting pitchers that have been on fire as well as one cold pitcher. We will also highlight the other pitchers worth mentioning on the current day. With our 10-5 MLB POD pending with Wednesday's result we'll look to Thursday's hot starters of which there are eight. Along with the pitchers who have ERA's under 3.00 in their last 5 we have just thre pitchers ERA's over 7.00 or just around 7. Hot Starters: John Lester (3-0, 34.2 IP, 1.82 ERA, 0.92 WHIP) I believe it's his first trip as our poster boy of the hot and cold pitchers report, but he finally deserves it and the Red Sox have also started to hit the ball. Lester has been solid and he'll go up against another solid left handed starter from the Twins in Francisco Liriano who has a 2.62 ERA on the season, but a 6.00 in his last 3. Liriano has started against the Sox already this year throwing 7 shut out innings, however his two previous starts he went 8 IP giving up 15 hits and 12 ER. Lester has also had limited success in this match up as he's gone 23.2 IP in 4 starts giving up 17 ER while posting a 6.48 ERA. Lucky for him the Twins are not killing LHP right now which may be a good thing as the Twins are hitting .289 in their last 5 while scoring an average of 4.30 runs per 9 vs. LHP. The Twins are 12-29 in their last 41 road starts vs. a LH starter while Lester and the Sox are 33-7 in his last 40 home starts. Twins are also 0-5 in their last 5 in Boston with Wednesday night's game pending, and the Sox are 7-2 in their last 9 vs. a LH starter. Jason Vargas (2-1, 34.2 IP, 2.08 ERA, 0.89 WHIP) Vargas has had quality starts in all of his appearances this year and now he goes up against the Blue Jays another team that struggles to hit lefties. However, he'll have to go up against a team that also has a lefty starter of their own which has not been good news for the Mariners this year as they are 0-5 in their last 5 vs. a LH starter. Vargas is 3-1 with a 2.00 ERA at home and the Blue Jays have never faced him before which should be an advantage going up against Ricky Romero who is posting a 2.88 ERA this year. Toronto has a .125 average while scoring 3.86 runs per 9 in their last 5 vs. LH starter and on the road they have a .212 average. Note: Blue Jays will be playing a late game on Wednesday in a time zone they are not used to only to come back and play a day game. If the Mariners take a game this is the game to take. Honorable Mention L5 Starts Ubaldo Jimenez (4-1, 35.1 IP, 1.02 ERA, 0.88 WHIP) Roy Oswalt (1-3, 36 IP, 2.75 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) Tim Lincecum (2-0, 36.1 IP, 2.23 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 45 K's) James Shields (3-1, 36 IP, 2.25 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 41K's) Andy Pettitte (4-0, 33.1 IP, 2.16 ERA 1.05 WHIP) Cold Starters: Luke Hochevar (1-2, 24.1 IP, 8.14 ERA, 1.85 WHIP) Hochevar got off to a decent start this year with a 2.90 ERA over his first 3 starts, but since it's been down hill as you see the above stats over his last 5 starts. Hochevar has had some good luck though on the road despite posting a 6.19 ERA he has a 3-1 record. Hochevar goes up against the Indians and Mitch Talbot who the Royals have never faced. The Royals continue to struggle to hit the ball and it won't get much better against a pitcher they haven't seen before with one of their worst in Hochevar on the mound. The Royals are 5-16 in his last 21 starts, and Hochevar has a 6.19 ERA in three career starts. Ice Cold: Scott Feldman (0-3, 28 IP, 6.75 ERA, 1.75 WHIP) Mark Buehrle (30.1 IP, 6.82 ERA, 1.55 WHIP)
