The Kansas City Chiefs are spiraling into the wrong direction in the AFC West, and spiraling rapidly. The Chiefs have scored a total of 10 points combined in their 2 games this season so far. Which obviously and of course is the bottom of the barrel in the NFL. In the meantime, their defense has been putrid as well giving up 89 points in those 2 games.
Do the math, they have lost their 2 early season games by an average score of 44.5 – 5. There is no way to sugar coat those kinds of numbers.
Compared to last years unexpected start when the Chiefs started 3-0 beating the San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and the Cleveland Browns by a collective score of 68-34. Seems like an awfully long time ago for Chiefs fans. They ended the season as a proficient scoring team putting up 23/gm and allowing 20. They also boasted the most amazing rushing game in the entire NFL, at 164 yards/game.
But when it rains it pours, and the injury bug has decimated anything the Chiefs have hoped to resume on in 2011. Then losing 3 star players, including TE Tony Moeaki who had 47 catches and 556 yards last year, and was 2nd on the team in receptions and then they lost Eric Berry, who is without a doubt an important safety and was a great player for them in 2010 with 4 picks, and 77 tackles.
And now they lose the beast, in Jamaal Charles. The speed demon running back tore his ACL in an anomalous weird freaky way sliding his foot on the first down plastic arrow, when it slid vaguely when his foot planted on it.
Charles was a human highlight film last year with his 1467 yards rushing and his incredible 6.4 yard/carry average, he was like a video game player. Make one move through the line zig left, hit spin then turbo, and good luck catching him. In his short 4 year career he boasts a beefed up rushing average per carry of 6.1, he was absolutely on the verge of becoming a top 3 RB in the league, with an average O-line, at best, in my opinion.
So, now with their main man down for the season, I am expecting 2nd year player Dexter Mcluster to step it up. He has nice wheels, and can carry the ball well too. Smaller than Charles, but he brings a different look, not as strong, but small and very elusive. In 2011 he has 12 carries for 93 yards (7.8/avg) and should get further carries.
Matt Cassel has been playing scared so far, with only 252 yards and 1 TD and 4 ints. He struggles with the long ball, and at times looks puzzled in the pocket. Adding Steve Breaston should help him, Breaston who is a very capable WR2 for the team, should start getting more action, except he is a long ball player.
The season is not necessarily over, of course, but it certainly looks in danger of it. With games on the season again bewildered Minnesota, Indy with no Peyton Manning, likely split with shaky Denver, and against the Miami Dolphins. The Chiefs can pull some semblance of a reasonable season out. But they need to get it together quickly.
If the Chiefs don’t get it together fast, Todd Haley will likely be on the hot seat within the first half of the season. Because they have looked immensely awful, he needs to get them on the same page, and try to salvage 2011.
Their decline has happened out of nowhere, and like all sports, things change quick, it’s the nature of the game. Question is, who is gonna step it up for the Chiefs?
