Packers v. Bears NFC Championship Preview

By: Jimmy Boyd     Date: Jan 21, 2011
Print Article

The Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears will do battle for a third time this season when they meet Sunday at Soldier Field in the NFC championship game. The NFL odds makers have spoken, listing the Packers as a 3.5-point favorite with the total set at 43.

The Packers and Bears both looked impressive in their divisional playoff victories. Green Bay completely dismantled top seed Atlanta, recording a 48-21 win behind a huge day from Aaron Rodgers. The Cal product completed 31 of 36 passes for 366 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He added another score on the ground.

Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler was instrumental in a 35-24 win over Seattle that wasn't as close as the final score might lead you to believe. Chicago scored the first 28 points of the game and led 35-10 with under five minutes remaining before giving up a pair of meaningless scores. Cutler completed 15 of 28 passes for 274 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added two scores on the ground.

The NFC championship very well could be decided by which one of these Pro Bowl signal callers plays better.

Cutler must perform better than he did in Week 17 when the Bears lost 10-3 at Green Bay. He was just 21 of 39 for 168 yards with no touchdown passes and two interceptions. He was also sacked six times. Rodgers finished 19 of 28 for 229 yards with one touchdown and one interception and only took two sacks.

Cutler performed much better when these division rivals met at Soldier Field in Week 3, helping his team record a 20-17 victory. He completed 16 of 27 passes for 221 yards with one touchdown and one interception and was sacked three times. Rodgers had a big day through the air, throwing for 316 yards with one touchdown and one pick and wasn't sacked. Cutler held his own in that game though, which will be critical to the Bears' chances Sunday.

It is worth noting that the Bears are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games versus a team with a winning record.

Both quarterbacks will have to contend with elite defensive units. The Packers finished the regular season ranked second in scoring and fifth in total defense with 15.0 points and 309.1 yards allowed per game. The Green Bay stop unit was at its best against the pass, limiting opponents to 194.2 yards per game through the air (5th in the NFL).

Green Bay's run defense did struggle at times, giving up 114.9 yards per game on the ground (18th in the NFL). The Packers, however, have done a much better job against the run lately, holding three of their last four opponents to 90 or fewer yards. The Bears were the lone team during this stretch to rush for more than 100 yards on the Packers.

The Chicago stop unit ranks fourth in scoring and ninth in total defense with 17.9 points and 314.3 yards allowed per game. The modern day Monsters of the Midway were downright stingy against the run, finishing second in the NFL at 90.1 yards allowed per contest. The Bears rank 20th in the league against the pass, allowing 224.2 yards per game. The secondary is the weakest area of the stop unit. The numbers, however, are a bit misleading. Chicago's opponents were forced to throw the football more due to their lack of success on the ground.

The Bears and Packers are also two of the best teams in the NFL in terms of forcing turnovers with 35 and 32 takeaways respectively during the regular season.

It is worth noting that the Packers are 9-3 against the number in their last 12 meetings on the road in this series.

Don't make a single move on this game before you see who world champion handicapper Jimmy Boyd is playing first. Jimmy and his clients enjoyed their 8th straight winning week on the pro gridiron after going 3-1 in the divisional round. He is now 6-2 in the playoffs and boasts 10-3 and 25-11 runs dating back to the regular season. He nailed 5* Top Plays on both the Packers and the Bears last week, and these top releases are now a white hot 9-1-1 in the playoffs dating back to last season. Jimmy's expert NFL picks will keep you cashing through Super Bowl Sunday. Jimmy had the Saints and the Under for a 2-0 sweep on Super Bowl Sunday last year.
