Georgia Tech vs. Iowa (+4, 51)
Who is Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets are the ACC Conference winner as they took down Clemson in the ACC Championship game. That championship game clinched them the ACC’s BCS automatic berth.
It is pretty clear what Georgia Tech does well. They run the ball out of the triple option and produced the 2nd best rushing attack in the nation at 307.15 yards per game. Despite opponents knowing that this team is all about the run they were still able to dominate people all year long. Georgia Tech is also 12th in scoring offense at 35.3ppg. Their rushing attack accounts for nearly 70% of their offense.
The rushing attack starts with tailback Jonathon Dwyer, who rushed for 14 TDs while rattling of 1346 yards. QB Josh Nesbitt, is the centerpiece of this attack and the man who makes the reads and decisions. Nesbitt rushed for 991 yards and 18 touchdowns. He did throw more than many think as he completed passes for 1689 yards and 10 touchdowns most them to WR Demaryius Thomas who had 8 touchdowns and 1154 receiving yards.
Well the offense is more than good, but the same can not be said about the defense. They give up a lot of yards (357 ypg). They also give up nearly 25 ppg which has caused them to be involved in many shoot outs.
The star of the defense is Sr. DE Derrick Morgan who had 12.5 sacks. Morgan was dominant early and disappeared for many games, but overall he has next level talent. Depending on the match up Georgia Tech’s defense can play well, but the majority of the time they find themselves in shootouts.
Who is Iowa
With dreams of the Rose Bowl or a possible national championship for most of the year Iowa won nine games in a row, but they then lost two of their final three. The loss to Northwestern proved to be quite costly as they lost their QB Ricky Stanzi, who looks to be 100% for the Orange Bowl.
Iowa is known more for its defense as the offense is ranked 103rd in the country in running the football and is 93rd overall in total offense. The return of Ricky Stanzi should provide a boost. Ater all Iowa was undefeated with Stanzi in the game. Stanzi had 2186 yards passing and 15 touchdowns, but also is prone to throwing an interception or two as he threw 14 this past year.
As bad as the offense was the defense was that much better ranking 11th in total yards allowed at just 286 ypg. They were 10th in points allowed and eight in pass defense. Standout linebacker Pat Angerer led the team with 135 tackles and will be the key man in stopping the triple option. Along the line is Jr. Adrian Clayborn who had 61 tackles to go along wit 9.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss.
Match-Ups
Georgia Tech will make its 14th straight bowl game, but they are on a 4 game losing sreak. Iowa on the other hand is 12-10-1 in their bowl history. Iowa is coming off a 2008 Outback Bowl victory over SEC South Carolina in a score of 31-10.
The big story here is Iowa’s defense vs. the triple option of Georgia Tech. Unlike many teams Iowa has had plenty of time to prepare for this style of offense. If the running game gets stuffed than Iowa will have a major advantage in this game and would feast on Nesbitt’s throwing ability.
