The start of the 2010 MLB season officially starts tonight, but I felt the need to run through the national league here today. Each team has the dream of making it to the World Series, but we know many teams out of contention pretty fast. Vegas sets the odds for total wins where you can bet on at many different sportsbooks. I will give you a run through of what I think the total # of wins will be for each team. Last year I was one of the best MLB Handicappers on the internet with 110-60 record on MLB POD’s worth 125 units in profit!
Arizona Diamondback – 82.5
Last season was a tough one for the Diamondbacks going 70-92. If there was a bright spot it was their young talent of Justin Upton who looks like he is on his way to becoming a star. D-Backs made a big trade and added a pair of young talented pitchers to go with Dan Haren that could make this rotation dangerous in the West. Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson will join the rotation along with Brandon Webb when he is healthy. Still health has been a major concern for this team and I think it will be close.
Pick = Under
Atlanta Braves – 86.5
This is the sexy pick of the NL East right now as many think the Braves are going to the playoffs and challenging the Phillies for the division title. I see it a bit differently. I think the Braves are asking a lot from Tommy Hanson in his sophomore year and I think there will be some fall back there. Tim Hudson is not the same pitcher he once was and can no long be considered an ace. Injuries have plagued the team leader Chipper Jones in the past, and I think again it will be close, but at the end of the day they play in a tough division.
Pick = Under
Chicago Cubs - 82.5
The Cubs finished 2009 with 83 wins. There is still some solid talent on the Cubs but they are aging quickly with Soriano and Derek Lee as the team’s best offensive players. They have not done anything to improve their team and there are still a lot of question marks. The NL Central is the weakest division in the NL, but I’m afraid the Cubs just aren’t good enough to contend with the Brewers and Cardinals.
Pick = Under
Cincinnati Reds - 79.5
I actually love the Reds this year despite it being a sexy pick year in and year out and being a total disappointment by midway through the season the Reds have a lot of young talent. They have gone under the total wins the last 7 years and they are due! Reds with Cueto, Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Drew Stubbs, and some veteran leadership with Harrang and others provide a club that can win 80 games inside the NL Central.
Pick = Over
Colorado Rockies - 84.5
Again the Rockies along with the Dodgers should be the two teams to beat in the NL West. The Rockies seem to get hot each and every year with long winning streaks which is what you need to win a division. They have basically the same line up with a few moves on the pitching staff. I’m a big fan of Ubaldo Jimenez and I just see him getting better!
Pick = Over
Florida Marlins - 81.5
Marlins had 87 wins a year ago and they have some real pitching talent to keep them right with this number all year long. The last few years they have over achieved and gotten off to fast starts. They have two absolute studs on both sides of the ball with Hanley Ramirez, the best player in the MLB, and Josh Johnson one of the best pitchers.
Pick = Over
Houston Astros - 74.5
Roy Oswalt is not the same and their health is a major question. I don’t see the Astros becoming a threat in this division as their rotation lacks any kind of talent and their lineup outside of Lee does not seem to scare many. However, if Lance Berkman gets healthy and hits like he has in the past this could be an easy over, but that is a big IF!
Pick = Under
Los Angeles Dodgers - 84.5
The Dodgers have two of the best young starters in the National League in Billingsley and Kershaw. They have plenty of talent to win their division. While other teams have gotten better the Dodgers really haven’t changed much, but with the best Manager in the NL in Joe Torre I see this going over the total.
Pick = Over
Milwaukee Brewers - 80.5
Brewers have one of the best one two punch on offense with Fielder and Braun, but outside of those two this team really is going to struggle a lot. The pitching depth just is not there and while they could easily win over the total in the National League East worst division I don’t think it will happen. They’ll hover around .500 for most of the year before going under at the end.
Pick = Under
New York Mets – 83.5
The Mets are my time and although I’d like to say over, I can’t comprehend how this team full of question marks could do this. In order for them to go over they are going to have to have big things come from two of the three question marks in the rotation which are Pelfrey, Maine, and Perez. All three have shown they can be #2 starters in the last three years, but haven’t proven it on a consistent basis. Injuries already plaguing the team as Reyes and Beltran will miss the start of the season while their ace is coming off major surgery. All looks like it could turn ugly in Flushing this year. On the bright side this team can surprise many and win a ton of games they certainly have the talent if they get healthy.
Pick = Under
Philadelphia Phillies - 92.5
The Phillies won 93 games in 2009 and now they have arguably the best pitcher in baseball in Roy Halladay. I expect Cole Hamels to have a bounce back year forming a talented 1-2 punch at the top of that rotation. The lineup the Phillies send out there has gotten better each year and again I see them being dangerous.
Pick = Over
Pittsburgh Pirates - 69.5
The Pirates have not won 70 or more games since 2005 and I see no reason why they would win more in 2010.
Pick = Under
San Diego Padres - 71.5
Padres look like an improved team that should be a lot better than last year’s team. A name to remember is Matt Latos the young starter proved he can pitch at this level last year and I look for him to make a major step in what will turn into him being the ace of this team!
San Francisco Giants - 82.5
With 2009 NL CY Young winner Tim Lincecum, Barry Zito and Matt Cain this team should be in contention all year. One name that is an X-factor that I forgot to mention is Jonathan Sanchez, the lefty pitched a no hitter last year and is another young talent rising fast. I expect this team to compete in the NL West with the top two in the Dodgers and Rockies.
Pick = Over
St. Louis Cardinals - 88.5
This is the class of the NL Central with the best pitching coach and best manger. Dave Duncan has a long history of turning sub-par pitchers into having career years. This year that happens to Brad Penny! Tony LaRusa is one of the best Managers and with the Cardinals having perennial MVP Albert Pujols protected by Matt Holliday this team is winning the division in a landslide.
Pick = Over
Washington Nationals - 70.5
The Nationals look to improve but 11 games? They won 59 a year ago and I see no reason why they can win more games this year after the division got considerably better with the Mets being healthier the Braves and Marlins and Phillies all in contention. It leaves nothing but the Nationals getting swallowed up by the rest of the division.
Pick = Under
