NFL Midseason report 2011

The NFL regular season is already halfway through. After the midway mark of the season, let’s take a look at some of the best and worst of the season.

Coach of the Year; Jim Harbaugh (San Francisco 49ers)The fiery Harbaugh signed with San Fran I found it a real interesting choice, and when he decided to stay with Alex Smith as his starting QB, after having a very disappointing career, I found that even more interesting a decision. But he has them scoring 27/gm (highest scoring output since 1998), and playing excellent defense as well, 5 times keeping teams below 20.

Biggest surprise team; Cincinnati Bengals, the Bengals who were in the middle of losing their QB, their WR, they had a putrid season last year, what was expected of a team, basically completely starting over with a rookie leading the team? A real solid start, going 5-2 at the middle of the season, last season, they went 4-12, and were only 2-5 at this point of the year in 2010.

Biggest letdown team; Atlanta Falcons, after going 13-3 in 2010 and making it to the NFC division game. This year they are struggling, much more than I think most expected from the NFC South champion, Falcons. Last year at this time they were 5-2 and they were only giving up 19, this year, they are 4-3, struggling for wins, and giving up 23/game. Matt Ryan needs to get back to where he was headed, because he is playing very average right now.

The best team in NFL; Green Bay Packers, this is a no brainer, they have amazing offensive skills, with Greg Jennings, Jermichael Finley, and James Starks, they have great defensive players in Clay Matthews and ageless Charles Woodson. More importantly they have swagger, a prominence, they bring fear to their opponents, like the Patriots used to do to their opponents.

The worst team in the NFL; Miami Dolphins, I truly think that this could be the worst team I have ever seen play. The Colts are pretty bad, but Miami has nothing going for them but the possibility of getting Andrew Luck in next years draft. If it works out as such, he would be walking into a position with some respectable WRs to throw to, they can’t score, their QBs are awful. Their coach is never sure if he has a job each and every morning.

Defensive rookie of the year; Von Miller (LB, Denver Broncos) 6 sacks, 21 tackles, and 2 forced fumbles. The LB from Texas A&M has been the only bright defensive player on the entire team, and he’s only 22 years old.

Offensive rookie of the year; Cam Newton (QB, Carolina Panthers) Cam has blown me away with his play. He has played so much better than I expected, I admit I was 120% wrong on my view of him as an NFL QB. 61%, 2393 Yds, 11 TD passes, and 7 rushing TDs. With a QB rating of 87.1, as of now, higher than Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan, and Jay Cutler. Not too shabby for a rook.

Defensive player of the year; Jared Allen (DE, Minnesota Vikings) 12.5 sacks, 25 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, and a pick so far and we have another half to go. The sacks machine is having a completely dominant year, and after Ray Edwards left, some thought it would be more arduous for Jared, because so much would be on him. If anything he has improved Brian Robison on the bookend, he’s the most forceful DE in the game today.

Most Valuable Player; Aaron Rodgers (QB, Green bay Packers) I could sum it up with one word. Incredible. Passing 71%, 2372 YDs, 20 TDs, only a paltry 3 INTs. Rodgers has turn out to be the best QB in the NFL, for years it was the Brady, Manning shelf. Rodgers can do everything they can do, plus move in the pocket (2 rushing TDs as well). Rodgers is a joy to watch play the game. Let’s get ready for the 2nd half of the season; it’s been great so far. I can’t see any reason why the 2nd half can’t get even better!
