Mike Martz & His Big Impact On NFL QB's (By Mike Handzelek)

By: Point Shaver Handzelek     Date: Sep 30, 2010
Print Article

Mike Martz has been dealing with QB transformations since 1999 and the days of Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams. Before we go any further, let's look at what Warner had before and after Martz came there. Warner achieved 5.6 yards per pass attempt before and an amazing 8.2 YPPA after learning the Martz system. Warner's team scored 17.8 PPG before Martz and ignited up to 32.9 points per game with Martz at St. Louis. Let's call his first venture a success as OC and HC at St. Louis. The big project came in 2006 when he had Jon Kitna under his wing with the lowly Detroit Lions. Kitna has 5.5 YPPA before and a 6.4 YPPA after Martz. Despite the Lions weak offensive line, Kitna's team improved from 15.9 to 19.1 PPG under Martz. Let's label project #2 an amazing success. In 2008, enter a very green Shaun Hill who took over the 49ers for Alex Smith. Martz saw a rise from 4.5 to 6.6 YPPA and an vast improvement from 13.7 to 21.2 PPG with Hill and the previously unsuccessful 49ers offense. Now let's look at the current situation with the Chicago Bears and Martz's new project, Jay Cutler. Last season, Cutler was a turnover machine that self-destructed more than not on the way to a 27/26 TD/INT ratio and barely a 60% completion rate. This season is seeing Jay Cutler have a 66% completion rate, a 6/2 TD/INT ratio and a 3rd ranking in the league in passer ratings with a 109.7 behind Peyton Manning and Michael Vick. A far cry from ex-OC Ron Turner, Martz is a master at altering his gameplan inside a heated affair. Let's look at the Dallas Cowboys tilt 2 games ago. Martz knew the heat was coming from all sides so he had Cutler change from his comfortable 7-step drop to a 3-step. What did this do? It freed up Forte as a quick safety valve and allowed Cutler to also hit Knox, Olson, Hester & Co. on quick precision routes for great production. Avoiding this pressure is something that even Matt Schaub & Co. couldn't avoid this past week losing decisively to Dallas. The current Bears have already beaten Dallas on the road then handled Green Bay at home to find themselves on top of the division at 3-0. Martz and his willingness to be impulsive is a big part of the Bears' success. TE Desmond Clark put it best, "He's not scared to draw something in the dirt and then tell us to go out and do it." CB Zack Bowman said, "In camp, Martz would see a defensive adjustment, he'd adjust and bam, next thing you know there's a big play." The results have been big dividends for the Bears. Cutler has improved his YPPA from 6.2 to 9.1 and his team's PPG from 20.4 to 22 thus far under Martz. However, the season is young and there's big challenges ahead for Cutler and OC Mike Martz playing in the Black & Blue Division. You can say Mike Martz has definitely improved each and every QB to come into his system. I can't wait to see how much of an impact he has on the Bears by the end of season in his Chicago debut.
