The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are rolling the proverbial dice like other teams have done over the last few years and risked the pickup up the 360 lb defensive tackle, Albert Haynesworth off waivers. After just one day the New England Patriots gave him the renowned “boot.”
Now apparently, Haynesworth is inspired yet again. He’s excited to be playing in a 4-3 defense in Tampa Bay. Albert, really? Look, you’re an enormous DT; you don’t always get to pick and choose what defensive format you will play in. Stop worrying about the scheme and play football for your team.
He’s a selfish player who only wants stout stats. Don’t get me wrong, every first-rate player, of course wants to have good numbers, because that’s what they are getting paid for, to produce, and oftentimes the numbers are evidence of what a player is doing on the field. And maybe a 3-4 wasn’t great for him, but you can still be a much appreciated DT in a 3-4, look at Jay Ratliff and Marcell Dareus.
He was one of the top end DTs in the league for 7 seasons, when he played in Tennessee, racking up 24 sacks, a high of 8.5 in the 2008 season. Also amassed 200 tackles and 6 forced fumbles, he stopped the run, and he clogged up the middle like a massive wall of might and control.
Then he left and signed with the Washington Redskins for what seemed like a bazillion dollars. And what happened next, football fans all watched the nauseating downfall of the relationship between Mike Shanahan and Haynesworth. It ended up one of the biggest busts I have ever witnessed.
He has not looked like he wants to give a full shot in years. He just doesn’t seem like he puts in a valid effort. In his last game he was tossed to the ground like a sack of “fill in your favorite terminology.” A far cry from the domineering DT when he played for the Titans.
He was a great asset to a defensive line with his ability to wedge things up, taking up blocks and opening things up for the defensive ends to get more pressure, all the while crushing RBs who dared to run through his lane.
He had argued and fought with Washington’s head coach Mike Shanahan, where many thought maybe Shanahan was trying to puff out his chest, now it’s kind of coming out in the wash, Haynesworth is a great deal of work and not necessarily worth the trouble.
He held high expectations, and I’m sure the Bucs have those same expectations for him as well, lining him up a young defensive line, who knows, maybe it will work.
Failing with the Patriots is a huge red flag. Based mainly on the fact that Belichick seems to usually get his players into good demeanor to produce for his team. I undoubtedly thought Belichick would get Haynesworth to play hard and get some quality play from him, after failing so badly in Washington. In 6 games, he had 0 sacks and 3 tackles. But of course, he bickered once more and continued to ruin his career, arguing with Pepper Johnson on the sidelines.
Haynesworth has a poor locker room presence, with a sluggish, no desire mind-set, who has had oppositional problems with numerous coaches and staffs. Is he worth the risk for young 35 year old coach Raheem Morris? I certainly hope the Bucs are ready for him, because I question how this ends up in Tampa Bay.
Albert Haynesworth has to ask himself, if he is a professional defensive tackle or if he isn’t. Stop your excuses, practice hard, play hard and stop disrespecting your authority figures.
